Barley Wine Style Ale is a big beer made with six different malts (Pale Ale, Crystal, Caramunich, Wheat, Chocolate and Roasted Barley) and balanced with a very full hop charge of Summit, Challenger and Fuggles hops. It is a deep reddish brown color with a complex fruity nose, a very full body, and an interesting balance between grains and hops which ends with a pleasing dry taste. To fully enjoy all the flavors, this ale is best drunk at 55 degrees Fahrenheit. 8.5% alcohol by volume.

Dark brown pour, small off white head. Great bready, caramel sweet, boozy malts. Subtle pine, pungent hops. This is a quite nice english style barley wine. Finish is a medium bitter, that lingers.

65 cl bottle, bb 12/2014. Very dark brown beer with a thick brown head. Aroma is a huge mixture of dark malts making their way into chocolate, dark bread, nutty and wooden notes, but not smokey. Then there’s a nive blend of UK hops. Alcohol is really noticeable, warming. A red wine attitude, quite complex but not excessively, reminds me of the Guinness Special Export, this fits well in the Stout cathegory rather than barley wine. Taste is well balances, nice sensation waves from malts and hops finish, moderately bitter. Body is full, carbonation is proper, mouthfilling, dry finish. I did like this one a lot and it’s good for winter.

Reviewed from notes.
The appearance was a very dark black/brown body with a small white head that dies within several seconds, body was too dark for any carbonation to be seen. Some light spotty lacing is left.
The smell had a roasted barley and chocolate come out pretty strong. Some malts and alcohol come out as the beer warms.
The taste had a roasted barley and chocolate come out fairly strong but some dark fruits come out in the taste as the beer warms. The aftertaste is a bit smoky.
The palate sat about a medium to heavy with a good carbonation felt.
Overall, its not bad, there seemed to be a lot of different flavors going on. I liked this and am pretty sure I’d have this again.

Aroma: Caramel, butterscotch, barley sugar. Not a lot. Strength is low. Appearance: Brown, very thick and creamy head that never falls down. Too much head. Taste: Again very caramel but with a strong bitterness as finish. Hops are very active. Caramel, malt and sugar notes are killed by hops. Too much bitterness for a Barley Wine. Sugars are powerless in this fight against hops. Mouth feel is thin without a lot of texture also. A DECEPTION.

65 cl bottle @ HBF. Rated on 21.05.2010
Aroma is rather malty with some raisins. Flavour has harsh, sweet malt, some raisins, ripe fruits and hints of toffee. Too harsh, a barley wine in English way.

Single bottle from the LCBO. Pours a deep ruby colour with a huge creamy beige head, with great retention and beautiful lacing. Aromas of fruits (plum, raisins, figs), sweet and roasted malts, with notes of chocolate and molasses. Smooth silky mouthfeel with absolutely no burning. The first thing that grabs me from the taste, is the hop. It has notes of rust (which I am not fond of). After sitting a while, it does slightly disappear, but the hop gives this one much bitterness, which results in a slightly dry finish. Notes of cherries, plums, wood, burnt malt, whiskey, caramel and bread. A very nice barleywine that goes down too easily. Just wish that rusty hop would not be in there.
