The Roman name for the Low Countries–is a marriage of the best in American and Belgian brewing traditions. Belgian pilsner malt, a generous amount of American and European hops and a unique Belgian yeast strain combine to give Belgica big notes of citrus and spice, creating a lively concoction perfect for spring in the Rockies–or the Ardennes. 7.2% ABV.

First released as Belgian IPA:
Just for fun, the brewers took our Titan, a hop forward American IPA and introduced a Belgian yeast strain to it. The result is unique Belgian-style ale with lots of fruity esters, a citrus hop flavor and nice hop bitterness that’s surprisingly smooth. 7.5% alcohol by volume.

Bottle cost $2.10 at Wine Warehouse, Charlottesville. Pours light golden with a small white head. Nose is full of corn. Flavor is a nasty mixture of left-over never-good keg beer and pepper. Yuck.

355ml Bottle from De Bierkoning. Clear bright yellow colour, white head. Floral aroma, very Belgian at first, with lots of yeast, citric hops. Flavour is sweet and malty at first, fruity, a hint of vegetables, a bit of yeast, citrus, ending in a dry light grapefruity finish. Medium bodied, soft carbonation, oily mouthfeel. American Duvel?

A beautiful golden translucent ale with a thick frothy and creamy off white head. A wonderfully spiced hopped aroma, with English inspired hopping, citrus and savoury herbs. In mouth, good sustained hops with herbal spices, grapefruit, saison-like with more oomph. A very nice offering. Bottle from Federal Spirits in Boston, enjoyed July 9 in Bogota, CO.

12 oz bottle. Pours a hazy golden color with a white head. Aroma is yeast and spices. Flavor is a sweet, lemony bread taste with a very yeasty finish. Not a bad Belgian ale.

Sampled on draft at Smokin Joes in Pittsburgh PA this beer poured a hazy bright yellow color with a medium sized soapy white head. The aorma was sweet and sugary. The flavor was sweet, tangy and tart with noted Smarties candy, candied fruits and too much alcohol showing through. The finish was long, tangy and tart with a Smarties candy undertone. Ok.

12 ounce bottle from Beer Run in Charlottesville, VA. And I believe I got no bottle markup (well, 1/6th of one cent) because Josh is a hell of a guy. Pours a golden color with a thin head. Poor head retention and decent lacing. Aroma of nutty malts, toffee, pear, apple and stale leafy hops. Taste is very spicy, peppery, herbal hops with some nutty notes and sweet grainy malts. This is definitely a strange one. Medium bodied,

Pours clear near pale gold with semi frothy off white head. The aroma is Belgiany yeast spice, dry apricots, floral hops, mild grapefruit and grains. The taste is sweet with malts, a touch of grains and solid floral hops. It gets a little raisin like and peppery toward midway with a dash of grapefruit hop bitterness coming along for the ride. It runs to the finish basically unchanged.

Pours bright gold into a tulip. White head quickly recedes leaving no lacing to hug rim. Dusty orange and aspirin aromas. Peppery and dry with upfront aspirin and a lasting orange citrus hop finish.

12 oz bottle from alagnak. Bottled on May 05 2009 stamped on the label. Pour is clear bright golden, settling builds up a thick 1 1/2 inch off white head. A few carbonation bubbles streak to the surface. Thick sticky lacing lines the glass as the head falls somewhat slowly. Aroma of herbal, catty fresh resiney hops. Behind that is coriander spice Belgian yeastiness. The two aromas meld decently well, but its mostly hops - then Belgian yeast. Taste is big bitter resin, floral, clovey sweetness - followed by a bunch of grassy coriander and brief lemon citrus. The finish is long with mineral earthiness and a peanut husk element. Also a hint of pepper spice somewhere in the back. This is a really interesting mix of hops, yeast and malt - though it is just that, a rough mix, not really a gentle combination. Palate is medium, mouth coating, clean dry bitter mouth feel and a hint of residual alcohol in the finish that continues to be more apparent as it warms. Thanks for giving me this one Chris.
