This is an old Dutch IPA recipe reminiscent of the ones that use to ship from Amsterdam to the East Indies. Unlike traditional English IPA's though our Van Vollenhoven EIPA uses less hops and gets its bitterness from the addition of Spanish Brandy to the beer which was a technique used by the brewery back in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Tap at Poesiat. Slightly unclear golden with white head. Sweet malts, massive citrus peels, canned sweetened fruits, grainy and sweet, some floral notes, some dry popcorn skins. Quite sweet and moderate bitter. Medium body and soft carbonation.

33 cl. bottle @ home, bought @ Wijn&Verwonderen, Culemborg. Hazy light yellow with a white head. Grainy pilsener aroma with some faint hops. Sweet taste with a bitter finish. I didn't expect a whole lot of of hops, this being a re-created old beer, but the amount of hops is really too low. I also didn't quite get the Spanish brandy which was being used. All in all a bit too restrained for me.

330ml bottle from Ace Drinks, Vlissingen. Pours misty gold, good white head. Aroma has some boiled sweet citrus. Taste continues, though does appear a little rough at first with a jagged bitterness and herbal notes. It does settle with good hoppy boiled sweet, orange, citrus flavours. Grew to like this one.

A nice English style IPA with central European hops. Not something I'd drink again too readily, but well done.

Bottle @ home. Hazy pale golden color, full sized white head. Aroma and flavor both have a lightly malt base, citrussy hops, a bit yeasty, some herbal notes in the finish as well. On the other hand, in general, it's ok. Not bad.
