This is an old Dutch IPA recipe reminiscent of the ones that use to ship from Amsterdam to the East Indies. Unlike traditional English IPA's though our Van Vollenhoven EIPA uses less hops and gets its bitterness from the addition of Spanish Brandy to the beer which was a technique used by the brewery back in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Lekker!

Clear pale golden colour, tall frothy white head, good retention, light lacing. Aroma pale malts, floral hops, lemon, light grapefruit, lichee, grass. Soft smooth taste, medium sweet and bitter, malty, fruity, bit piney. Sweetbitter aftertaste, lemony notes, light to medium body, oily texture, soft carbonation. Not your usual suspect IPA-wise, nice mild one, easy to drink.

Bottle @ home. Clear golden colour with a small to medium sized white head. Smells some hops, weird sweetness, some herbs and spices, somehow slightly cinnamon. Tastes hops, sweet, fruits, banana, wheat, spices. Banana doesn’t belong in an ipa imo. Medium body, soft carbo. I kinda like the beer if I ignore what I would expect from an ipa.

(Draught at Arendsnest, Amsterdam, 30 July 2017) Pale golden colour with creamy, white head. Fruity, hoppy nose with citrus, grapefruit, lemon and biscuits. Fruity, hoppy taste with notes of citrus, lemon peel, grapefruit, biscuity malt and a dry finish with a fresh citric bitterness. Medium body, quite dry. Tasty and refreshing with a generous hop profile. Nice one.

On tap at the brewpub, sample. Clear deep golden colour, dense white head. Aroma is floral, citrus, melon, pineapple, bread. Flavour is light sweet, malty, bead, melon, light citrus, bitter finish. Light bodied. Not the kind of fruity hops I like. Not bad though.
