Tom Paine is a premium dry hopped bitter named after the celebrated radical who lived in Lewes in the late eighteenth century. America celebrates 'Independence Day' on the 4th of July and in Britain CAMRA has designated July 'Independents Month' in celebration of Britain's independent brewers.

From cask at Charlies. Pours almost clear and deep orange with a bubbly and lacing off-white head. Fruity and bitterhops aroma, a bit on the darker side. Flavour is solid hops fruity with a light caramel malt base. Light acidity. Lovely apple, peach and plum fruity hops flavours into the finish. Light sweetness initially but gradually going more bitter. A bit oily palate.

Cask conditioned handpull at White Horse, Parsons Green. Attractive clear orange copper colour with no head. Harvey’s yeast aroma, some fruit, burst of hop in mouth leads to tangerine. Not too hoppy on end. Juicy sweet orange and malt finish. Pleasant 3.7/5

Cask. A bourgondy colored beer with no head. The aroma is sweet woody combined with notes of alcohol and peaches, while the flavor is sweet malty with notes of caramel and wood as well as light notes of hops.[7/3/6/3/13]

On draught at the Bow Bar, Edinburgh: Copper coloured with a small foamy layer, that sticks to the glass; fruity (lemons) and a bit vinous aroma, but mainly distinctive floral hoppy nose; very solid sweet-bitter flavour, medium bodied; zesty, citrousy finish with a fine, srong hoppy aftertaste. A very nice, tasty, spicy and well balanced brew......

(Cask, Royal Oak, Borough, London, 22 July) Colour is amber with almost no head. Nose is fruity with that distinctive Harveys note of yeast, sewage and dusty hops. Taste is fruity with dried fruit (dates), citrus (mandarin), sewage and dusty hops. Slightly sweet, suppose that comes with the abv. A very nice Harveys beer, served at my favourite outlet for Harveys (perfectly conditioned as ever).

Cask. OK hop aroma, grassy and piney. Almost clear grey/chestnut colour. Small creamy head. The flavour is nice and hoppy. Hop aromatic, grassy and piney. Medium bitterness, quite nice, not rough. Low carbonation.
