Draught at BBF12. Mildly roasted bread aroma and flavour. Very dark brown colour, clear. The flavour starts off bready, turning a little grainy. Not bad.

International Green Week, Berlin 2012: at last we reach Hall 12, the hall dedicated to German breweries and food to go with beer. We find a table and seats by the Andechs bar leave the womenfolk to keep the area safe. I amble a few yards and notice a brewery bar I’ve never heard of before: Privatbrauerei Ernst Barre, the Pilsner first, I went back for the Dunkel soon after! The Dunkel is dark, a very dark brown, clear but almost too dark to see through, even when held up to a strong light source. The head was a medium thick covering of foam, off-white/beige in colour. Lightly roasted malts hit the nose, semi-sweet molasses (toffee, coffee, caramel), biscuits and toast. Flavours in the mouth are also heavy on the malt content; some fruit type tastes also come into play after the initial flavours reduce their impact: the hops prevent the beer becoming too sweet but add very little bitterness to the overall feel of the beer which I thought was nicely balanced. I do prefer the sweetish maltier brews usually and this was an ideal beer to have before the ‘Liebinger Zeppelin’ I was to have next.

33cl bottle from Bierzwerg. Poured colabrown, thin beige head. High carbonation. Aroma is sweet caramel malt, some roasted notes as well, as well as some dark bread. Flavor is sweet caramel mostly, quite dull and uninteresting. Aroma promised more.

Herb-malziger, deutlich muffiger Antrunk. Wässriger im Mittelteil, geringfügig säuerlich-bitter, das Malz ist weitestgehend verflogen. Im Abgang nur noch wässrig, langweilig, keine Spur von Malz. Lahmes Dunkles. 9/6/5/5/8/5

Bottle. Dark chestnut brown, offwhite lacing creamy head. Light roast and fresh bitterhop aroma. Fullbodied, bready, roasted malt, good aromatic and bitter hop balance, maybe a tad metallic. Fine sparkly mouthfeel. Pleasant.

Bottle (333ml): Brownish-amber coloured, slowly collapsing off-white head, dense dark-malty, also coffeeish nose with fruity and bitter influences; moderate bitter-sweet flavour, light to medium bodied; discreet fruitiness in the bitter-sweet-malty finish. Pleasant and quite well balanced........

(33cl bottle) Clear, mahogany colour with a fluffy, slowly lacing beige foamy head. Discreet aroma: moderately sweet, slightly toasty malty nose with light notes of caramel, nuts and herbal hops. Light to medium sweet malty taste, slightly toasted and nutty with a whiff of caramel and herbal hops; rather dry, nutty and slightly hop bitter finish. One of the better Barre beers.

(Bottle 33 cl) Brown with a reddish edge. Fine, creamy, white head. Light malty nose. Slightly cardboardish. Top fermented and hence rather unusual for Germany - but you simply don’t sense the top-fermentation. Same brewery also makes an "Alt". 170705
