Lambic (and modern sour ales) often has redcurrant-like aromas so it seems weird that so far, hardly any redcurrant lambic seems to have been produced (De Cam being the only other producer I know who has one)… Tilquin, however, did incorporate this fruit in their experimental fruit lambic series. Tasted at Moeder Lambic Fontainas, thanks to SterV and Trevor for sharing! Loose, thin, unstable, off-pinkish head, cloudy salmon pink-tinged pale orange robe. Aroma obviously teeming with actual ripe redcurrant, not entirely covering the ‘metaphorical’ redcurrant impressions of the lambic itself, further notes of unripe gooseberries, redcurrant bushes with a ‘green’ aspect to it, stale sweat, raw rhubarb, sour yoghurt, lime. Tons of sour berry acidity in the onset – obviously – but juiciness too, tomato and redcurrant impressions at the sides of this big green gooseberry flavour, lime-like almost, very refreshing, lemony sour on the edge of becoming harshly puckering. Bone dry finish with that green ‘bush’ factor returning, rhubarb- and tomato-like aspects as well, vague background bitterish accent. Very juicy and ‘enthusiastic’ like the others, and this one is so far the only one to have been selected for further development into a bottled ‘Oude Groseille’ version, the release of which is scheduled for later this year – I can only hope more will follow, but this is one I’ll try to get my hands on as soon as it hits the market as a redcurant lambic cannot but have huge potential.

Beaverfest Day 2. Keg. Hazy peach - pink beer, no head. Dry palate, mild fine crispness. A light gueuzey vibe. A little lemon that turns slightly acid. Light dry finish. Not too bad.

Keg at Beavertown Extravaganza. It pours hazy bright red – pink with a small white head. The aroma is musty, dirty, barnyard, manure, funk, sweat, filth and some tart red berry. The taste is crisp, dry, crazy tart, sour redcurrant, cranberry, pithy, barnyard funk, dirt, poopy manure vibes and bright acidity with a dry finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Not for the faint of heart as there is a lot of barnyard funk kicking about here. I enjoyed it nonetheless.
