Cask, Special;
The brewer from this famous brewery has visited Marston’s Brewery, Burton upon Trent, to re-create this classic beer, renowned by beer critics and drinkers throughout the world. Virtually black in colour, this is brewed using four varieties of malt (pilsner, Munich, brown and caramel), providing intense aromas of toastiness, chocolate, coffee and liquorice. It is strongly hopped to provide an impressive, bitter finish to this outstanding, complex imperial stout-style beer.
Hops used: Saaz

Opaque black beer. No head, no carbonation! Rich dark malt with a trace of dark chocolate. Somewhat stronger in tone is coffee. Smooth. Some dark fruits coming through at the end and even a little port. Complex nice beer. Some condition on it would have been nice!

Cask@St Urho’s Pub. Opaque black color, almost non-existent head. Licorice, cold cofffee and beans or vegetables in the nose. A bit light palate. Cold, burned coffee, toasty, roasted bitter aftertaste. Not much to do with the original. Too thin, too burned.

Cask, JDW Hoylake Lights. Black with a small muddy tan head. Roasted caramel malt aroma. Coffee and dark chocolate notes in the flavour and some hop bitterness in the finish. Predictably not as good as spoons say it is on the label, but not without some charm.

(Cask at Penderel’s Oak JDW, Holborn, London, 19 Apr 2009) Pitch black colour with frothy, brown head. Roasted (or burnt), malty nose with notes of espresso, dark chocolate and ashes. Roasted, malty taste with black coffee, prunes, raisins, liquorice, ashes and a generous chocolatey bitterness in a heavily roasted finish. Full bodied, fairly sweet. Possibly not as powerful and well balanced as the original version of this beer, but still a lovely porter.

Cask at the Hope Tap (JDW), Reading. Tar coloured with no head whatsoever; aroma of spiced plums and ruby port; rich, purple fruit flavours with a trace of black treacle; leading to a finish that’s rather thin, but fruity and warming. Not quite as I remember the real thing in Helsinki, but pretty good none-the-less.

[Gravity cask at Back of Beyond, Reading] Pours black with a small, messy tan head. Strong black coffee dominates, with hints of chocolate. Harsh bitter finish which obliterates the flavours somewhat. There’s no hint of smoothness, complexity or subtlety here at all - the contrast with the Baron’s Bushberry Porter I’d just had couldn’t be greater. Despite being a little thinner than I’d expect, it still feels like a real spit-and-sawdust, kick-you-in-the-teeth, frontier beer - you can imagine this being knocked up in the backwoods somewhere. As such it has a certain rustic charm - but I’m still not sure I’d want to make its acquaintance again.
