Cask @ Abel Heywood, Manchester. Copper with a creamy head. Has an initial chocolate burst that gives way to a more malty bitter after a while, but there’s still elements evident, certainly in its nose that retains a dry aroma in this respect. Has a medium bitterness.

Hand-pulled half-pint in the brewery tasting room (Mr George’s Windmill bar) on 1 April 2013. Dark body: deep amber in colour with a white crown on top. Malty chocolate notes in both the taste and smell: bitter finish to an otherwise semi-sweet yet fairly dry beer. Body depth suited the flavours and alcohol level, all in all a pleasant beer.

Cask at Charlie’s Bar, Copenhagen. An amber beer with a thin orange head. The aroma is sweet malty with notes of caramel and flowers, and some odd spicy, soapy note. The flavor is sweet malty with notes of caramel and toffee as well as a lighter estery fruity note, leading to a dry nutty finish.

Gravity cask condition, The Chambers, Folkestone. Copper colour with thin beige head. Slightly boiled sweet flavour. Very toasty malts, as you associate with the darker Bateman’s beers. Decent condition. Bit of fruit. Some odd, almost pasteurised boiled sweet. Some dryness on finish. Good toasty malt throughout.
