A classic stout with deep chocolate and mocha flavours; this rich, velvety and wonderfully drinkable beer is the perfect accompaniment to roast beef, oysters and game. This beer’s long and glorious heritage dates back to the 18th century when a glass of stout and a plate of whitstable oysters became the pairing of choice for millions of thirsty britons.

Tap at Mr. Foggs. Pours black with a light brown head that lasts throughout the beer. Aroma has a nice roast and creamy dark grains with a bit of an earthy oyster bite underlying. Flavor has dry roast and earthy dark grains with a growing umami presence.

Bottle from Macknade's Fine Foods, Faversham. Black with a middling beige head and a moderate fizz. Maybe a touch too fizzy for my liking. Coffee and a little chocolate up front, then tobacco and salt, followed by soy sauce & unami in a dry finish. An unusually savoury stout; I really rather enjoyed it.

Bottle drunk in the Crab & Winkle in Whitstable while eating Whitstable oysters. You cant get much more terroir than that!! Lovely colour with a nice long lasting head. Plenty of toasted malts and dare a say a tang of the sea to the flavour? Great mouth feel and it perfectly complemented the local oysters that were eaten raw with a touch of vinegar. Bliss. I even got my 10 year old to try a bit of oyster; which she hated. Heathen.

Cask at PoW, Farnborough. Nil aroma. Dark. Thin beige head. Light bitter. Slight sourness. Coffee. Berries. Something odd and umami. Pretty light. Minimal carbonation. Astringent finish. Thought it was a pretty poor attempt. Bland as...

Tap at the Hotel Continental, Whitstable. Poured a clear dark brown with a broken tan head and a few bubbles. The aroma is roasty malt, sweet creamy caramel, chocolate. The flavour is moderate sweet with a crisp, watery, smoky, liqourice hop bitter palate. Medium bodied with average carbonation.

Cask at the Claret, Addiscombe. It pours black with a small beige head. The nose is bitter-sweet, toast, some acidity, light soy sauce coffee and toasted sesame. The taste is bitter, roasty, liquorice, salty touch, mild acidity, coffee, hint of soy sauce with a dry finish. Medium body and soft carbonation. Textbook cask oyster stout. Pretty solid.
