Armada Ale was one of the first new 'Golden Ales' that emerged in the 1980s. It has a pronounced yet balanced hop character, derived from Fuggle and Golding hops. Originally commissioned by the National Maritime Museum, it quickly established itself as a piece of living history. Robust, refreshing and still a port of call in any beer-drinker's voyage of discovery.

Cask at the Lamb Inn. A very enjoyable pint down the local. More golden than the Best but a bit more flavour. Same. Same score (3/5/18) --- Cask at Lamb Inn, Eastbourne. A real solid interesting ale with good hoppage. 3.7 to 3.6. (25/9/21) --- Cask at The Cricketers Arms, Berwick. A brilliant cask ale. Well rounded. Kept same.

Cask at the Garland, Redhill. Ruddy tan/brown, clear and almost flat. It’s got that nutty/yeasty astringency to the odour that so many Harvey’s beers have. Taste is bittersweet, the bittering hop leads but there’s a roast chestnut and doughy sweetness lingering just behind and coming to prominence in the finish. Vegetal notes in the aftertaste, and the body is oily, so points off there. Flawed but solid enough.

Cask draft at the Royal Oak. Gentle amber pour, head dissipates quickly. Malty character throughout, taste adds a bit of caramel and some sweetness. Noticeably dry, but nice lingering brown bread flavors.

Royal Oak, Borough. Zero aroma. Bright amber. Dregs of a white head. Light to medium bitter. More so in the long finish. Light and airy mouthfeel. Not bad, just not particularly interesting.

Cask at The Lord Nelson, Brighton. Dark amber color, small white head. Sweetish berries, malts in the aroma. Light-bodied. Caramel, toasted sugar and light earthy hops in the flavor. Watery finish. Odd combination.

Hand-pulled pint in the brewery owned Royal Oak, Borough, London. The Sussex Best Bitter was very poor on my visit on 11th Sep 2014 so I got my little party this next: it was in worse condition if anything. Really disappointed with the cask quality and i should have taken every beer I bought back to the bar, but others around us seemed to be drinking their pints. This rate will be altered (hopefully) on my next trip to London although I doubt my wife, son and his father-in-law will ever venture into a Harvey’s pub ever again.
