An unusual beer, it is neither a porter nor a stout, but a black ale. It is a proper English pale with the addition of heavily roasted grains. Only English hops are used, some of them later in the boil to leave behind essential oils and hop aroma. This beer tests the drinkers senses – the eyes are saying it’s heavy, the mouth says it’s light, perhaps sometimes dangerously so….

Bottle that Justin shared - cheers! Dark reddish brown with a thin beige head. Roasted malt dominates with a little chocolate and smoke. OK stout, but rather thin and muted for the ABV.

The best I’ve had of the lot of these Ridgeway beers. Dark brown pour with no head or lacing on cask. Roast malt and nice thick consistency. Creamy texture. Dry bitter leave. Cask at Churchkey.

Bottle from Sainsbury. Poured a clear dark brown with a reddish hue and a frothy light tan head. The aroma is big roast, creamy caramel and raisins. The flavour is medium bitter with a creamy malt hop bitter palate. Medium to full bodied with flat carbonation and a long bitter finish. There is a lot going on here. Carlsberg don’t brew beer, but if they did they should be like this!

500ml bottle at home. Chilled by accident and didn’t want to wait for it to unchill itself. So maybe I don’t get the full range of flavours here. Still, pours a promising dark colour with some nice roasted malts, figgy hints, grains but nothing overbearing.
