Roused by William Blake's Jerusalem, Wells Sanatic Mills epitomises all that is great in English brewing. Like the original Bombardier Premium Bitter, this rich, dark ale is uniquely brewed using natural mineral water from an independently accredited source; our own well. Created by Wells and Young's, Satanic Mills uses the finest English 'Fuggles' and 'Goldings' hops. Sampled by hand, only the most flavoursome part of the ripest hops is used, guaranteeing a delicious fruity aroma and exceptionally smooth palate. Satanic Mills is brewed using 'Ale' and 'Chocolate' malt, intensely roasted to give the ale its dark colour and intense depth of flavour. The malt is carefully crushed, not ground to enhance the complex flavours.

Bottle. Near black with a strong tan head. Aromas of dark fruit and bitter chocolate. Flavour was slightly sweet with some roasted coffee and a dry finish. Enjoyable.

Really nice looking beer. Pours pitch black with a brown head, really reminded me of Guiness Foriegn Extra looks wise. The smell was quiet nice, but altogether too weak, a bit of coffee in there. Taste was also a bit weak considering the style. A burnt coffee and dark chocolate flavour, as you’d expect just toned too far down. Nothing really ’bad’ about the beer, just dissapointing for me.

568ml bottle from Sainsbury. Black colour with dark brown edges. Thick tan head. Roasted malt aroma. Choc and coffee with touch of charcoal. Some hidden dark fruits. Some molasses. Is this really something that Blake or indeed John Stuart Mill would want to be associated with? It’s actually pretty good having said that. The choc flavour grows. I guess the finish is a bit disappointing, but nice dark beer.

500ml bottle from Sainsburys. A black body with a milk chocolate head; aroma of blackberries and toast - an unusual combination!; smooth and initially fruity in the mouth, then chocolate and coffee flavours take over; not as dry a finish as I was expecting, quite mellow in fact.

Bottle from Sainsburys, Banbury. Poured very dark almost black with off white head. Some fruits and hops show themselves in the aroma which I though was otherwise lacking a little. Tasted not unlike many of the other Wells (and Youngs beers) and it really did remind me of one but I can’t think which although I’m fairly certain it isn’t the original Bombardier, why have they used Bombardier in the name, is it just a marketing ploy? The beer carried some of that fruitiness in the aroma through to the taste along with some bitter and roasted flavours, this never quite did it for me and I was a tad underwhelmed if truth be known.
