Bottled Conditioned 500ml - Aroma has some smokey malts. Smoke is quite a dominant flavour but some bitter coffee manages to come through. Far too gassy.

Sampled from bottle at Scopeys 2nd East Croydon Beer tasting, thanks to Paul. Very small off-white to light brown, fully diminishing head. Pitch black, opaque color. Flat appearence. Smell slightly coffee, slightly roasty, not much more. Taste light to medium bitter, lightly roasty. Bitter finish of short to average duration. Light to medium body, average carbo.

Bottle from Nelson Wines at the 2nd East Croydon Beer Tasting. It pours jet black, with a thin off-white head. The nose is salted caramel, liquorice, dark chocolate, toffee, dark cherry and smoke. The taste is caramel, roasted malt, charcoal, filter coffee, ash and smoke, with a dry, roasty finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. Straight forward, but well done.

Bottle at East Croydon Beer Tasting, thanks to Paul. Lots of cocoa and mild ash on the nose, some roast. Pours brown with a creamy, tan head. Medium sweet flavor, good roast character, plenty of ash and tobacco. Some scorched earth, mild bitterness. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Dry and roasty finish, dark malts, mild cocoa. Very solid.

RBESG 2010, cask at Brasserie 4:20
Black color; creamy head (sparkler). The aroma is a mix of chocolate, cereals, yeast, medicinal components. Lean body, chocolate flavor, very light liquorice, with correct bitterness; the final is dry, with a tad too much roasted malts. Not at its prime.

Cask-conditioned at the Crosse Keys (JDW), London 14/01/10. Opaque, near black in colour with a decent tan head. Aroma of charred malts, dark fruit and a touch of fruity hop. Flavour of black coffee, a touch of milk chocolate and long, roasty dry finish. Excellent.

17th April 2008 Lightly toasted malt. Quite a silky palate but dry. Finishes on a sweet toffee note. No real bitterness. 3.

21st January 2011
On tap at the Magpie, New Street. Opaque dark brown beer. Little tan brown head. Smooth palate, fairly neutral. Mild creamy coffee with some milk chocolate (the cheapest kids type). Segues seamlessly in to a mild fruit and tangy hop. The coffee gets more espresso like in the semi dry finish. Joins up pretty well. Much better than the bottled version!
