Forget the ABV, which is just a by-product of the passion. It was James & Josh from the Queen’s Arms, Corton Denham, and Justin Hawke, founder and head brewer here at Moor (hence the JJJ) whose shared enthusiasm for great beers and 9 years ago now were lamenting the lack of true IPAs in the UK. So they decided to brew their own version of heaven. Double IPA was just not enough - it needed to be a triple IPA. Triple the gravity, triple the colour, and more than triple the hops. With over a tonne of malt and 65kgs of hops this beer is big in every sense. In fact, it was so big and hoppy the first time round that it broke our pump! This beer is a real blend of British and American brewing styles. Unlike many Imperial IPA’s being brewed today this is made with 100% malt, adding a depth of flavour beyond the hop character. Deep copper in colour, over the top in aroma and flavour, but somehow still remaining (somewhat) balanced, this beer is not for the faint of heart.

Can. Beer Central, Sheffield. Holy shit, I never would’ve imagined this beer was first brewed so long ago. Just shows how much Moor is such an influential, progressive brewery, who popped up on the cusp of a beer revolution in the U.K. I imagine drinking this, then, is like the first time trying Summer Lightning, or a bottle of White Shield or Orval. Super juicy. Super easy drinking. Awesome.

Bottle shared at the RBESG ’14, Grander Tasting @ Moncada, 09/08/14. Lightly hazed golden amber with a moderate off white covering. Nose is earthy hops, barley wine vibes, bitter citric peel, candyfloss. Taste comprises melon, grapefruit, orange pith, spice, earthy hop presence, caramelised sugars. Medium + body, fine carbonation, punchy citricana in the close. Still very drinkable at 3 years old, turning towards a barley wine.

660mL bottle, 9.5%abv. Pours an orange amber, tiny white head that dissipates quickly. Big sherbert and grapefruit aroma, can tell from the nose that this is going to be fairly well balanced with caramel and toffee to combat the bitterness, taste equals that along with some booze burn. Carbonation is off a bit, not that I want too much but this needs a bit more, can make the case that it too closely resembles a Barleywine with this little carbonation. Finish is pure hoppy bitterness with booze burn.

BBE 31.3.2014, only one month to expiry date. Orange brown beer without head, only white bubbles. The nose is sweet and fructose, tropical fruits, peaches, sitrusfruits, some caramell. Taste is strongly sweet, tropical fruits and caramell. After beginning the bitterness starts to evolve, mouth dries and taste turns to piney, slightly citrusfruity and then in the end is strongly pine needled. No carbonation, almost full bodied, not heavy. Not very good condition but still quite nice even this old. Strongly sweet DIPA, the bitterness is there after beginning.

650mL bottle, pours a murky dark amber / burgundy with a small beige head. Aroma brings out shitloads of caramel malts, loads of resinous hops, and some syrupy residues. Flavour is way on the malty side, more like a barley wine, with boatloads of caramel malts, resinous hops poking through, and loads of syrupy. Loads of sweetness in here, like a malty barley wine, with strong hops. I'd classify this more as a barley wine, but I'd love to try this fresher (than 4 months). Excellent stuff.

Bottle. Creamy off-white good mostly lasting head. Amber colour. moderate malty and heavy hoppy aroma. Heavy bitter flavor Long great heavy bitter finish. Creamy palate. Actually this bottle was a hidden gem in my cellar. It was BB dec12 so I was a bit worried, but this has indeed been a great experience. I wonder if I would have given higher score if fresh but as I still rate above the beers average my rating stands. Keep it up Moor!
