Bitter was one of the first beers brewed by Brains back in 1882 and has stood the test of time as a mainstay of the brewery ever since. Traditionally in Cardiff, Bitter was always known as “Light”… because it wasn’t Dark!

With fruity pair drop notes in its body and a mildly toasted aroma, Bitter is an honest, crisp refreshing beer for everyday drinking.

Cask at The City Arms in Cardiff. Pours clear copper/beige head. Aroma of mild malt/caramel. Near med body. Flavor is mild, slightly bitter; caramel, maybe floral hop. Not much, if any, spice. Easy drinker for sure.

Cask half pint at The Cottage, Cardiff, as Brains Original Cask Bitter. ABV is 3.7%. Deep golden to amber colour, small white head. Moderate malty aroma, notes of toffee. Moderately malty flavour, not sweet, a slight fruitiness, "clean" and refreshing.

Hand-pulled pint in The Pheasant, Wellington, the Ironbridge/Wrekin brewery tap/brewpub on 25th July 2014. Very different to the bottled version, or at least it seemed it to me: lighter and more citrus notes in both the aroma and taste. Still enough Malt in the brew to give it a semblance of sweetness but this is a hoppier beer all round. Still liked it.

Fra cask på Ye Olde Salutation Inn, Nottingham 26 Jan 14. Mørk gyldenbrun med et lavt pent skum. Aroma av karamell. Smaken er svisker & litt plommer. Blir tørr etter hvert. Avslutninga er tørr frukt.

Golden brown bitter. Sulphur and yeast aroma, nice basic bitter taste and finish. A reasonable enough pint, but not the best product from the otherwise very good Brains brewery.

Pours pale brown with a decent white head. All downhill from there. Smell has a touch of vinegar. Taste has bite, but not in a good hoppy way, in a chalky way. Not nice.

Fra fat på ferie i Wales many years ago: det jeg husker best er historien om da Prince Charles uttalte til stor jubel hos studentene på universitetet: "What this country needs is brains" (!)

On cask @ the 3 Kings, Cullen as 3 Kings Ale. Pours dark amber with a nice head. The nose is mainly malt with some biscuits. The taste is malty with a more obvious biscuit note. The palate is well balanced, medium bodied and fairly well balanced. Overall, solid but not memorable.
