A beautiful sunny afternoon on Friday 7th September 2012 saw my father and I join in R.A.T.2012 (Rail Ale Trail part 2). Split between three bars along the Wolverhampton to Shrewsbury railway line: they had over 50 different beers to try: this was one of them. Half-pint, gravity fed in the fest tent behind ‘The Odfellows’ in Shifnal. Light amber, golden brown, you choose: a white head tried to sit on top, but failed to stay around too long. Not too sure how this became CAMRA Champion Beer a few years back as it wasn’t any better than other beers on the day I tried it. Nice blend of flavours with the hops foremost in the smell and taste stakes. Well balanced and a pleasant enough session beer but nothing to set it apart from the rest of the field.

Cask at Oliver Twist. Pours amber with a white, for a cask ale, big head. Yet again, for a cask ale, bitter taste taste of plilsner like hops and honney.

Medium coarse offwhite head. Brown body. Faint malty sugary aroma. Delicate sweet-dry malty roasty wooden taste with resiny floral notes. Mild, smooth mouthfeel. Mid-bodied. Dry roasty caramelly aftertaste with dandelion floral notes. Nice, subtle, and drinkable. (0.33l cask at Akkurat, and at some Bishop’s Arms pub.)

Cask at the Cask Pub & Kitchen on 29th January 2010. Copper with lasting small white head. Plenty of malt: biscuit and caramel notes. Rich hop, citric and herby notes on the tongue. Bittersweet finish, slightly creamy texture. A pleasant, warmly rounded beer.
