Duchy Originals Organic Ale has opted for a traditional, British barley variety Plumage Archer to give the beer a rich depth of flavour.
The organic hops for this delicious beer are also British, First Gold, a new dwarf hop variety grown in Kent and Worcestershire. The beer is brewed to Duchy Originals' recipe. The Duchy Originals Organic Ale is a ruby-coloured flavour-packed beer which combines the rich caramel flavours of the barley malt with the signature ripe orange nuance of the First Gold hop.

bottle from the LCBO. aroma is kinda sweet, but the hops are definetly there. flavour is bready, and again, a little sweet, but the hops really come through in the flavour. I really enjoyed this, very very easy to drink.

Bottle, rating from old notes. Poured slightly hazy amber colour with small off-white head. Aroma of caramel, malt, fruit and hops. Moderate sweetness, medium bitterness. Moderate body, oily texture, soft carbonation.

From Jul 2007

Purchased at Wilbur's Liquors in Ft Collins for US$4.49

This one pours from 16.9oz bottle a clear amber with an ample head of foam that shrinks slowly leaving a fine layer and it has some good lacing.

The smell has good notes of caramel malt and fruit.

The taste is malt dominated. Plenty of caramel there with some dark fruit, mostly plum and fig. Pretty tasty. The finish, where most of the hop profile shows up, is on the dry side. This is a pretty easy ESB to drink and I know I could enjoy a couple of bottles without feeling too filled up. It's going nicely with the very warm weather we're having here in Casper...

With the second pour, I'm getting a slight haze and the flavours are still holding my interest. I'm glad I picked up this bottle. :^) Good stuff!

Nov 2009: Brown 50ml bottle had two months before its best by date. It was poured into an ’Old Speckled Hen’ badged vase shaped pint glass. Clear, but not bright, the colour was golden brown with a reddish hint. An off-white head sat on top, thick at first then a thinner covering. The head did produce some good laceing as the glass emptied. No huge aroma came from the beer, some hop and toffee maybe. The taste was fairly bland, fizzy, mid-dry, the malts and hops are there but neither grabs the beer by the neck and sorts it out. The 5.0% ABV doesn’t feature or show in any way, the body suffers because of that, it seemed watery and lacking in the creamy, rich stakes. Drinkable, but a mild disappointment.

Clear amber with a white head. Aroma is malty, caramel, fruity and hoppy. Flavor is medium sweet and moderate bitter. Dry and light bitter finish. A bit light bodied. A pleasant surprise. 050311

Originally rated May 2007. Comes in a classy-labeled brown bottle, that seperates this brew from others that Wychwood brews. Best before date is 21 JAN 08. This organic ale pours a clean copper colour with an off-white head, that is creamy, but does not stay as long as most beer of this type. Still, some decent lacing remains on the glass and a tiny coating on the brew itself. The carbonation is average. The aromas are on the sweet side, but not too much. A bit of fudge and fruits. Wow ! The taste I must say, is very, very good and well-balanced. Some grain and caramel at first, with then, some mild bitterness, wood and smoke in the aftertaste. All of that, and not too strong, so that this brew is still refreshing for all seasons. The mouthfeel is almost dry. Usually, I find organic beers to be quite different, but if someone did not know this fact, they would think this is a regular, very well-brewed bitter. Surprisingly inexpensive at the LCBO, for this kind of quality. Very much recommended.

Toffee nose. Clear amber, thin yellow head. Malty toffee flavor. Standard bitter. Remarkably unremarkable. Faint orange finish.
