Cask at GBBF 2006. A pitch black beer with a brown shine under a thin brown head. The aroma is sweet with strong notes of roasted malty combined with notes of caramel and chocolate. The flavor is sweet with notes of chocolate and roasted malt - though it isnโ€™t leaving any dryness. the mouthfeel is smooth but a bit thin.

Cask conditioned at Merton Beer Festival 17-02-07. I was really looking forward to this beer having heard so much about it and the plaudits it has received. I thoroughly enjoyed it although much like the Amarillo I think there was a part of me that expected it to be even better than it was. This beer poured a very dark brown colour and was almost without a head. There were some bitter coffee notes but not as much as I anticipated. The taste was smoother than I expected with some dryness although it was also quite smooth in a stout kind of way, coffee and roasted notes were the major taste characteristics of this beer but it was a little more complex than that and developed the more that you got into it. I thoroughly enjoyed it and whilst it was slightly different to how I would normally expect a mild to be, it was quite different to some of the more robust strong milds that are really just teetering on the egde of what most people would normally accept at being a mild. Very good.

(Cask at GBBF, London, 2 Aug) Colour is dark brown, almost black, with beige frothy head. Nose is roasted with black coffee, chocolate and bitter cocoa. Taste is malty and roasted with notes of chocolate and dark rye bread. Some sweetness, rather smooth and with a nice bitterness in the finish. Taste leaning in the schwarzbier direction. A very nice new acquiantance.
