I am not a huge fan of this brewer. I am also not a big porter fan - so my hopes were note real high going into this one. Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a dark black color with a small tan head. The aroma is sharp dry malt, a hint of chocolate, and crisp hops. The flavor is dry, malty and has a moderate coffee flavor. The finish is dry and almost gritty.

Deep black porter with no head. Sweetish herbal aroma with coffee notes. Sweet porter with notes of cold coffee and licorice. Oily mouthfeel which surrounds the mouth, rich and smooth. Bitterness from hops noted in mid tastting. One of the good red hook products. Bought in Scotia NY.

Very dark, though not exactly black. Small head- reminds me of root beer almost. Only slight porter scent... Taste is roasted and rich, but also a bit thin. Nothing extraordinary here... drinkable, but nothing great.

Bottle Pours very dark (of course) with a nice light tan head and decent lacing. Aroma is semi-sweet chocolate, and coffee. Toasted and smokey. Very subdued flavors. Smooth quick finish. A bit thin and watery maybe but easy going down. Easy finish. No hoppy bitterness.

Nitro Tap 2002. Very smooth, not challenging, medium body at best. Very clean with little finish or aftertaste. Good enough flavor though while it’s there. Quite sweet and drinkable. One of the first tap porters I really enjoyed, but after moving on to other similar beers and coming back, the magic had died. Looks great on tap. Slightly roasted aroma, with some lightly sweet malt.
