Cask at the Cambridge Blue, Cambridge. Midnight black. Intense smoky coffee combines with an odd bourbony/vinegary sour. Taste starts sweet, then bitter, then sour. Moreish bitter/sour finish, surprisingly dry. I used to drink this when I lived in Devon nigh on 15 years ago, and it’s lovely stuff but far from everyone’s taste. Not your normal strong porter. But still very good.

(bottle, 27.5cl , vintage 2006) Pitch black colour with a beige and short creamy layer. Sweet and berry-fruity, also roasty malty aroma with liquorice and a spicy and slightly woody hoppy blend. Sweet and slightly bitter flavour, full bodied with a moderate carbonation. Roast-malty taste with notes of caramel, liquorice, as well as subtle fruity notes and a warming alcoholic touch; sweet-bitter, roasty and slightly burnt malty finish with assertive notes of caramel, liquorice and alcohol. A good winter warmer. 29.XII.08

On gravity at the Bag O’Nails, Bristol, 15/4/10. The true ABV of this at the time of serving was 11.8%. Almost black in colour, with Roasted, charred malts, bitter chocolate and dried, black fruits. The flavour had more of the same, plus some supporting caramel sweetness and plenty of warming alcohol. An unusual and successful English beer.

[275ml bottle from Tuckers Maltings, Newton Abbot] Labelled as Edwin Tuckers Empress Russian Porter (2006 Vintage) - one of just 2,012 bottles produced. Pours thick black with a moderate, slowly diminishing brown head. Looks incredibly gassy on pouring, but no evidence of fizz when tasting - this is very smooth indeed. Huge aroma of roasted malt, backed up with blackcurrant, liquorice and cough mixture. On first taste - phew, does the alcohol hit you. This is strong, and likes to show it. The alcohol burn reminded me of Rochefort 10, but unlike Rochefort 10 where the alcohol kills off the flavours to a certain extent here it somehow enhances them. The taste therefore is initially of more heavily roasted malt - there’s some peaty smoke in there, lots of blackberry fruit, black coffee, red wine and some totally unexpected English hop flavours of straw, farmyard and earth. The finish has some dry, smoke-and-straw bitterness, which takes just enough of the edge off of the thick texture and alcohol burn, yet manages to leave you with a relaxed, contented, happy glow. Somehow the brewers have managed to not only balance sweetness and bitterness perfectly; they’ve also managed to balance an incredibly aggressive start against a happy relaxed finish - a fantastic effort, and the more I drank the more I appreciated it! Think my mark may have been even higher with a larger bottle, but equally I may well have fallen over too! I’d heartily recommend this for sipping slowly whilst relaxing late into a winter evening. Cheers!

Bottle, Vintage 2006: Pitch-black with a small persistent tanned head. Solid port-vinous nose with a touch of brandy and hints of dried fruits and toasted malt. Very solid dry bitter-sweet flavour, full bodied. Vinous-fruity traces in the warming, brandy-like finish. Fine brew......
