Originally brewed for the brewery's launch in 1994, Coaster was named after a style of boat which on occasion can be seen plying its trade near our home at Rock on Cornwall's rugged North Atlantic coast. Brewed to 3.6% ABV but with a generous measure of flavour and light golden hue, Cornish Coaster is both moreish and refreshing and the perfect beer to quench the thirst on a hot summers day.

(Cask at Oxford, London) Again a decent bitter. Looked like I expected it should. Also flavours and aroma didn’t provide any surprises, neither negative nor positive. If I really wanted to pinpoint something I would say this beer was a bit too sweet for my taste.

13th July 2010. Chelmsford Beer Festival. Hazy gold beer. No head. Sour dry palate. Tired fruit hop. A little sulfur on the nose. Tired and uninteresting.

Cask. A very golden beer with an off-white head. The aroma has notes of citrus, malt, and caramel. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt as well as lighter notes of butterscotch. Somewhat boring.

Cask at the Betjeman Arms, St Pancras International as Betjeman Ale. Hazy amber with a ring of white head, not looking at its best. Served in a dimpled pint mug - don’t see many of those nowadays - clearly aimed at the tourist market. Fruit and honey aromas; more honey flavour, also sour apples and some grain; dry metallic finish. Not very pleasant. This could well be Cornish Coaster despite the "exclusive" tag.

1st December 2006 Cask@The Jolly Angler, Reading Looks like a golden ale, with a dull gold colour and traces of a white head; rather watery and acidic but clean tasting; a bit like a malty tonic water; refreshing bitter aftertaste, but overall uninspiring. (3/3/6/3/10=2.5)

Re-rate - 12th July 2007Cask@The Pakenham Arms, Mount Pleasant, London. Seems like a completely different beer - hazy gold with a trace of white head; deep citrus hop aroma; full of fruit flavours, citrus and tart apple; a strongly bitter finish. Excellent for its strength - full of flavour. (6/3/7/4/15=3.5)

Cask, Ship and Mitre, Liverpool. Golden with a thin white head. Some hop in the aroma. Insipid flavour of dusty hop and vague malt. Pretty tedious fayre really.

Cask, hand-pulled at Sharps Brewery Bar. Moderate start on the last day at GBBF 08. Appealing, clear golden body supported by a thin, bubbly white top. Smooth floral smell. Fruity-hopped taste with satisfying hop bitterness to the end. Rounded palate. Summer feeling (09.08.2008).

[handpump at The Retreat, Reading] Very pale for a bitter, with a small lasting creamy head. Mouthfeel is creamy, almost like something nitrokegged. There is not a lot of flavour, although it tastes pleasant and well balanced enough - some honey sweetness initially, a hint of citrus and then a dusty hop bitterness following through. Overall impression was bland and watery, although very easy to drink - obviously designed as a session beer. A little disappointing compared to other Sharp’s beers I’ve tried. c3
