Brewed from the late 70s at Burton. In 2000, after Interbrew bought the Bass brand, production was switched to the Ulster brewery in Northern Ireland. In 2003 production and distribution was switched to Latrobe for a 12-18 period after which it reverted to the UK, latterly at InBev’s Samlesbury brewery. As of 2012, the US version was being produced at A-B InBev’s Baldwinsville brewery.

Pours clear amber, at first quite prominent foamy head but after a short while, nothing really left of it. Nose caramelly, sweetish and grainy. Malt caramel? Taste has moe of that, mild and smooth still, fruity, and lots of biscuits there in the second wave. Toasted caramel, bitterness is quite light, some metallic elements coming out in the end. Aftertaste is relatively mildly bitter, some more metal. Overall, well, drinkable - yes, excellent - not really, English - probably so.

Bottled at the BA lounge, IAH. This bottle says 5.1% It pours clear amber with a quickly dissipating off - white head. The aroma is sweet, stick, mostly caramel and toffee, toasted brown sugar, candied orange, cherry cola and generic fruitiness. The taste is crisp, restrained bitterness, caramel, toffee, big cola vibe, brown bread, cereal and some dried fruits. Watery mouth - feel and some prickly carbonation. Pretty basic stuff. Drinkable it is, but it is the sort of thing any old dirtbag could brew with a malt extract kit.

Flaska hos Petrus. Söt doft av skumtomtar. Söt smak av honung, sött bröd, lätt beska. Söt och blek pale ale som lämnar en del att önska.

Draft. At Holy Grail, Epping, NH. Clear gold color thin lasting head in a shaker pint. Aroma is light bready malt, dead old hops.
The flavor is an ESB in its simplest form. Grain base with weak bready malts. The hops are here but seem dead. However in nearly and English style beer the hops are weak. The texture is thin with a watery body. I seem to remember this being better when I was living overseas. Of course my palate has come a long way since that time frame. Not awful.

Rated from old notes. Bass has a unique taste that is instantly identifiable. Initially sweet, with caramel and malts. Rather staid and unexciting, but still pleasant. Faint sourness at the finish. Good with food. Decent.

Draught, small bubbly head, clear light copper to red color, aroma of bread and fruit with some banana and a hint of spice. Bread and caramel flavor, sweetish with a light bitterness. Drinkable but quite boring and mediocre.
