Bah Humbug is a brew using not just the traditional malted barley and hops, but also a big sprinkling of cinnamon. The effect of the cinnamon is to give a spicy, almost banana-like flavour as often found on German wheat beers; and this blends with the sweet-honeyed flavours of the Maris Otter barley to create a beer with all the fruit flavours of mince pies, Christmas Pudding and Christmas cake all rolled into one.

bottle - Pours amber with a thin white head. It has a metallic aroma with some caramel malt. After that rough start, it gets better. The flavor is spiced caramel malt with mild hops. It’s medium bodied and finishes light with some mild bitterness. Pretty good. The bottle looks great, but once again the Wychwood bottle is more impressive than the beer it contains.

Pours deep copper into an English pint. Offwhite head recedes to pancake surface leaving spot lacing. Fruitcake and malt aromas. Cinnamon and candied fruits with a mild, lasting hop finish.

Bottle: Poured a deep clear amber color ale with a good size foamy head with good retention and very good lacing. Aroma of caramel malt and cinnamon are very well balanced. Taste is again very well balanced between caramel malt and cinnamon with some notes of banana and cloves also discernable. Body is very creamy-like with some great carbonation and a medium full body. I thought the mix between the malt and the cinnamon was very well done in this one.

Bottle. Pours a dingy brown with a smallish head and a spicy aroma that makes me think of nutmeg and cloves. Flavor is nicely spiced and sweet with caramel malts, while mouthfeel is fairly sticky.

This ale poured a dark, dark copper with a nice foamy light tan head. To the nose it had scents of spice and hopps, earth and a slightly sweet malt scent. First taste was s,lightly hoppy with the flavour of caramel at the beginning with a hoppy finish next and ending back with the caramel. I can’t really taste the cinnamon. The palate is lightly bitter. Very good.

Brown bottle from Bottle Barn. Aroma of dark fruits. Plummy. Hazy ripe apricot flesh color. White head is reluctant to appear, and then departs in haste. Deep inhalation of the vapors is rewarding. It’s thin in body. The carbonation is virtually non-existent. The flavor is thinnish. There’s darkish malt and dark fruit, but the body is lacking. Watery for a winter warmer. However, there is a complex set of flavors. Chocolate, wood, spice, bitter. Not a sugary, sickish ale at all. The finish is woody, astringent, dry. A surprising ale.

Amber color, poor head retention. Light aroma of caramel and toffee. Mild taste, dry caramel and light toffee again. The final is short. Too simple.
