Can with a Roy Lichtenstein-themed label shared by Craftmember, cheers! Regular, moussy, disparately lacing, slowly dissolving, off-white head over a very warm orangey ’old gold’ coloured beer with a peachy, even almost pinkish hue, lightly hazy. Aroma bursts with tangerine, mandarin flesh, lime zest, ripe rambutan, guava, ripe strawberries, marmelade, biscuit, unripe mango, soap, sweet dessert wine, grapefruit peel (strongly so), butterscotch candy, dark honey, grass, minerals. Vividly fruity onset, some vague green plum wryness underneath a coat of pear-, mango- and strawberry-like sweetness, softly carbonated, with a smooth, ’round’, lightly oily body. Sweetly caramelly and biscuity malt middle, even a tad honeyish, supporting a delicately aromatic, sweetish, perfumey hop finish, orangey, mango-ish and fragrant, leaving behind a quite pungent, yet very elegant hop bitter ’sting’, soft and brief but effective enough. Elegant, sweet-charactered ’new’ IPA, very agreeable and drinkable; I do not, however, see the link with Belgium, perhaps it’s the malt sweetness which is being characterized as typically Belgian here? To me, this qualifies as a modern, 21st-century, "international" pale ale regardless of substyle - this is definitely not a "Belgian ale" to me and fully belongs in the (ordinary) IPA class as far as I’m concerned - but I really enjoyed it, whatever its overly particular characterization.

Can at the Oakford Social Club, Reading. Amber with a middling white head and a light fizz. Thought it was an IPA for some reason so it was quite a shock to get that Belgian yeast whiff off of it. On tasting there was doughy bread and toffee, the fake foam banana sweets I always seem to get from Belgian yeast, a little spiciness and lots of juicy orange. Generally on the sweet side although there is a little bitterness too. The brewer calls it a Belgian IPA but there’s a lot more Belgian than IPA here. Now I’m normally no fan of Belgian ales, and have never been convinced of the wisdom of combining them with IPAs, but I quite like this one- so well done to the brewer for impressing a sceptic!
