Hobsons Chase is a beer of pedigree and synergy.
Our friends and neighbours at Hobsons Brewery supplied us with a Barley Wash, made using locally grown Maris Otter malting barley, which we distilled and have since spent years conditioning in oak casks as it becomes our own Herefordshire Whisky.
Hobsons Chase is the blending of our very first whisky (yet to be released on the market) and Postman's Knock from Hobsons to create a superlative whisky beer.
330ml bottles. William Chase website.

Bottle from Coed Y Dinas, Welshpool. Opened up this bottle to find a chocolate-like substance on the underside of the cap and at the top of the neck. The whisky influence in this ale does taste like chocolate. It was not out of date, not that that matters much anyhow. Reddish-brown with flavoursome chocolate malts.

Bottle from the Offie, Leicester. Dark brown with a nice tinge of translucency. A ring of cream head. Oats, chocolate, whisky, a bit of plum on the nose. The liquorice-laden taste is sweet, intensely so, but somehow it's not too much, and there's a wash of bitter hop near the finish. More liquorice, coffee grounds and some oak in the finish. It all hangs together very nicely indeed.

Bottle from Cotteridge Wines, Birmingham. Poured a hazy dark brown with a frothy off white head. The aroma is buttery fudgy malt, alcohol and aromatic hops. The flavour is moderate sweet with a rich, earthy malt, light fruit, dry woody hop bitter palate. Medium bodied with average carbonation.

330ml bottle: BBD 27 Apr 18. Poured slowly into a Gordon ’Finest Gold’ thistle shaped glass at home on 19 May 17: the first beer in a mini-tasting session I am having with myself. Lovely dark look, lightly tanned bubbles sit above the well carbonated body. I know the base beer very well and like it, the whisky adds only a slight difference to the taste and aroma (in my opinion). Malty, with a vanilla twist, very like the base beer: needs more whisky to push the flavours and aromas from the original loveliness of the Postmans Knock. Liked it though.

Thick, creamy, beige head soon left a cover on a near black, slightly effervescent body. Sweet coffee, malt & vague whisky notes in the aroma. Medium to thin bodied. Very smooth on the palate - a slight tingle on the back & little cloying. Malty, caramel tastes with dark sugar, coffee, hints of dark spirit & nice long bitter back. Quite enjoyable

330ml bottle from Mike @ Appleyards, Shrewsbury. Pours deep brown with reddish hints, creamy light tan head. Aroma bears caramel with very faint whisky hints. Taste is smooth, with ripe dark fruits, very smooth chocolate with fleeting mirage-like whisky notes. It’s smooth, balanced but a little safe and could do with being a little richer.
