Tap at the Royston Hotel, Melbourne. Poured a clear dark brown with a thin white head and lots of clingy lace. The aroma is roasty malt, grassy hop. The flavour is moderate to strong bitter with a crisp, dry roast, grassy, liqourice hop bitter palate and a long bitter finish. Medium bodied with average carbonation. A good black IPA but a little lacking on the citrus hop side for my liking.

Just what you’d expect from a good BIPA. Roasted malt and coffee blended with a magnificent hop aroma. Not sure what hops - galaxy? The palate is solid and the roasted coffee flavour is prominent in the mouth. Lovely.

Pours black with a large tan head.Nose shows tropical fruit, soft roasted malt, bready noets and very soft oak.The roast plays a more dominant role as a flavour, with cocoa and nutty notes. Again, the oak is very soft. some lychee, pine and papaya are present too. Pretty awesome stuff.Carbonation is perhaps just a little high.

Bottle split at the Black (IPA) Friday tasting, big thanks to Bro Josh, licker of men, 09/05/14. Light black with a moderate tan covering that thins to edgework. Nose is bitter roastings, pine, bitter grapefruit, cocoa powder. Taste comprises light coffee notes, pine bite, tropicana, cocoa powder. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Adequate CDA - not one to revisit though!

Leighton 10K tasting at Bruce’s pad. Cheers to Josh for sending this one over. Almost opaque darkish brown beer. Small pale cream coloured head. Palate is light and crispy and slightly dry. Very mild dark malts, just a touch of dark character. Piney hops, skunky and carrying a very citrus. Underneath is mild vanilla oak which sets this one aside from a lot of CDAs. Light dry finish. Very nice.

From a 330ml bottle on 11/5/2014. Pours a very dark tan with a medium head. The aroma is fruity, floral and a touch roasty. Flavour wise, it beautifully balanced with caramel, fruit, a touch of coffee and a very firm but not over the top hop bitterness. This is definitely on the sweeter side for a black IPA but damn it drinks well. The palate is a touch creamy and the carbonation is medium. Really smooth and supremely well integrated. Can’t recall having a Black IPA which is better than this.

Bottle thanks to Josh. It pours darkest brown with a small light tan head. The nose is rich roasty, varnish, citrus peel, potpourri, floral, toast and dirt. The taste is toasty, earthy, caramel, roasted malt, decent bitterness, varnish and pine needles with a dry, bitter finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. Solid black IPA.

Bottle shared in London - big thanks to Josh! Pours deep black-brown with a frothy beige head. Some chocolatey roast in the snout, juicy citrus fruits, ripe berries. Medium sweet flavor with dusty milk chocolate, understated roast, old chocolate cake, toasted grass, ripe grapefruit, orange. Medium bodied with fine, massaging carbonation. Burnt sugars on the finish, very slight resins, mild roast, more milk chocolate. Pretty nice.

Bottle, 11C. Dark brown with a light tan head. Smells very like Karma Citra - bitter oranges, lychees, mocha. But the toasty vanilla notes are immediately apparent upon a sip, along with some slightly zingy spice notes at the end. The cocoa and slight nuttiness of the normal version are there too. Pretty good and the treatment adds things rather than interferes or overwhelms, but I still would take the normal version over this. But impressive and thoroughly enjoyable.
