Imperial Stout Brewed with Coffee

One of our most coveted Nietzschean narratives, Genealogy of Morals, inspires our bourbon barrel-aged imperial stout of the same name. We present to you the opportunity to enjoy the non barrel-aged base beer, simply named Genealogy, brewed with malted wheat and locally-roasted coffee, then conditioned in stainless steel. Dark, rich and smooth, its complex flavors belie the singular vision with which we create it—echoing the work that inspires it.This is the the non barrel-aged version of Genealogy of Morals, conditioned in stainless steel. Poured from 500mL bottle (bottled 02/21/2018). Near black with small tan head. Sweet-ish malty, some feint green pepper coffee character with a touch of astringency, mild roast malt, comes together nicely, but the coffee character throws it off a bit - probably aged a little too long. Okay.

On tap at the brewery, 2012 vintage. Pours black with a big tan cap. Liquorice, roast, coffee, nutty, velvety milk chocolate. Lovely smooth body. Excellent.

15/VII/21 - 500ml bottle @ home, BB: n/a, bottled: II/21/18 (2021-626) Thanks to ElManana+1 for sharing the bottle!

Clear dark brown to black beer, small creamy irregular beige head, unstable, falls down quickly, bit adhesive. Aroma: nice roast up front, malty, some chocolate. Not very complex though… MF: ok carbon, medium to full body. Taste: pretty sweet, malty, good roast, bit metallic, bitter, sweet. Aftertaste: sweet, sugary, alcohol, malty, soft roast, pretty bitter, heavy, bit oxidized, some soy sauce, rather bitter finish, nice stuff, but not my favourite.

50cl bottle pours an opaque black with some creamy, khaki head with some light legs. Nose is interesting, molasses, roast, plenty of burnt grains, chocolate syrup, palm sugar, raisinette. Flavor has the coffee and its wet and dank, raisins and dates and dries figs, heavy chocolate syrup, malt, molasses. Finishes long and smooth and full bodied. Wow. Lots of character without any barrel.

Shared by KBL. Black with lace. Nose is coffee, licorice, soy sauce, dark chocolate syrup. Wheaty flavor, chocolate sauce and lots of soy--too much for my liking, umami central. soft, silky, oily. Sweet and rich, and tasty for sure, but I keep feeling I want to dip sashimi in it.

Hill Farmstead Genealogy 9.5% Imperial Stout Brewed with Wheat & Coffee Inky black with a rusty wispy head and a savory umami coffee aroma. Full bodied with a bit of nutty coffee and slightly spicy coffee flavor. Very smooth and balanced, tasty and I could go through 500ml of this by myself. As it warmed you got roasty + wheat flake flavors, damn this is good. Ap 4 Ar 8 t 9 p 4 o 15

Spring 2018 bottle drunk 8/14/18 and Feb 10th, 2016 bottle drunk 11/7/18. Review is for the 2016 bottle.
Dark ebony with a dark tan head atop showing moderate retention. Careful pour, but it's difficult to tell the clarity. Definite ruby-magenta highlights on the edges.
A really lovely mix of char, prune, raisin, vanilla, milk chocolate and very light fudge. It's neither seemingly sweet nor boozey. Coffee is light, adding mild fruitiness and earthiness, with lingering tobacco, vanilla and toffee. The char-like element definitely adds some power/force to it and it certainly smells strong, but the wheat and toffee/chocolate character help keep it pretty balanced. More prune and raisin emerge as it warms.
In the mouth you taste the wheat right away. It's quite unique for an Imperial to have this much of it apparent, but it's fantastic. Light coffee, raisin, prune, ash, char and vanilla quickly crowd in but are all balanced by a silky, luxurious base malt sweetness that adds milk chocolate, toffee and light fudge to the mix. Good acidity lingering on the finish, with very low, but engaging carbonation. No alcohol or flaw. Nice powerful Imperial Stout to please the die hard American Imperial Stout fans, yet with plentiful vinous, ash, char and tobacco for those who enjoy a more British experience.
