A 100% Brett Black IPA from the 8 Wired Brewing Co. in New Zealand. A rather uncommon combination of styles - very interesting indeed.

500ml bottle. Pours jet black with a frothy tan head. Aroma: really funky... citrus, some roasted malt. Taste: funky citrussy hoppy flavours, roasted malt, bitter. Smooth mouthfeel, low carbonation, medium body. Hmm... love the idea of this but I guess I just don’t get why this funkiness is a desired trait. Honestly I find it offputting in what is otherwise a fantastic beer, the Bretta really lets it down (in the aroma at least), but the taste isn’t as affected, but yeah... bit too much funk.

500ml bottle. Pours a reddish tinged dark black-brown colour, with a big foamy beige head leaving lacing and aroma of barnyard funk & fruity zesty citrus. Taste is dark malt, notes of coffee, roast, with some funk, fruity citric wet hop and earthy bitterness. Medium bodied, soft carbonation, dry roast bitter finish with zesty hints. Interesting mix, nicely drinkable

Nice funk, but the roasting balances well

500ml bottle. Darkest brwon colour with average to huge, thick, creamy, mostly lasting, well lacing, beige head. Intense, bretty, funky aroma, dark malty background, citrusy hoppy overtones, hints of chocolate, some orange. Taste is dry, funky, roasty dark malty, notes of dark chocolate, subtle residual sweetness, hints of orange; soft palate, gentle carbonation. Very good.

One of two bottles split at the Islington tasting, which I picked up from We Brought Beer, 07/07/16. Black with a well appointed tan cap. Nose is funky, Brett strokes, red grape must, light charr, spice, hop dusting. Taste comprises liquorice, spice, tangy red berry, light roast, Brett scrapings, spice, light pine. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close with tangy fruit esters paralleled with earthy hop bitterness. Decent and complex number.

Cellar clean out session Pt Deux. Hazy black - brown beer, tidy pale tan head. Palate is light, dry and has a fine minerally carbonation. Bretty savoury dominates. Mellow dark chocolate malts. Mild pine and milder tropical fruits. Light dry bretty bitter finish. Not bad but the brett is a little over done.

Bottle shared at Craft Beer Co Islington - London. Many thanks to Daniel. Pours clear brown with a foamy, off-white head. Definite brett in the nose, some good funk, light roast. Light sweet flavour with Band-Aid phenolics, brett funk, earth, light chocolate, berries. Light to medium bodied with massaging carbonation. Lightly drying in the finish, with more strong brett character. Good stuff. Novel.
