Hoppy Red Ale

Never afraid to stray from the flock, Gangster Duck is unique in style – it smells like an IPA exploding with fancy hops but pours an amber color and has a smooth malty finish with just enough bite.

Can courtesy of trapped, thank you very much! Clear deep deep amber color white head. Toasted caramel aroma. Taste starts malty but with a decent piney hop bitterness. Tasty.

16 ounce can. Bright copper, red color. Large, firm beige head. Faint toasted malt nose has metallic, bean-like notes. Tangy, sourdough toasted malt flavor. Medium bodied and smooth. Tart, bitter, cathartic, xenophobic finish. Unmistakable.

Tap at Draught 55 slight cloudy amber. Nose is floral hops and caramel. Tastes of caramel, floral, dried foliage, plum, apricot, malt, and slight bitterness on finish. Ok but doesn’t quite sing.

32oz growler from Superstar Beverage Huntington. Pours a ruddy brown with some creamy white head. Nose has some caramel, orange, mild pine, a bit dusty. Flavor is a bit better, sweet, malty, caramel, cracker, a little bit grassy, orange, pine. Crisp, bitter finish. The product, as a whole, is better than the parts.

Location: Growler from Superstar Beverage - Huntington, 9/22/14

Aroma: The nose of this one is light, with citrus hops, some caramel, and grassy notes
Appearance: Pours a clear orange-amber color with a small off-white head and some sticky lace
Flavor: The flavor is lightly sweet, malty notes, spice notes, and some closing bitterness
Palate: The body is light-medium, with a decent mouthfeel, soft carbonation, and a mid-dry finish
Overall Impression: This is a decent beer, but there's something just a bit off in the flavor profile. Otherwise, the feel and pour are quite nice, and the aroma is solid as well. Pretty decent stuff, but the hoppy Amber is a style I tend to really enjoy, and this one is not a favorite in that particular style for me.

Drought. Amber color with whitish creamy head, citrusy hops aroma, low carbonation, sweetish hoppy taste, long finish. Interesting brew.

A reddish copper ale with a thin mocha head. In aroma, nice caramel malt with smooth floral hops, citrus pulp, nice. In mouth, a nice caramel malt with floral hops, resinous and grassy, very nice. On tap at Covenhoven.

The Bodega, Brooklyn tap ($6): Pours ruby with a white, creamy head. Aroma is hoppy with minimal caramel malt. This goes more in the red IPA direction than the traditional American amber ale style. Taste is mostly hops, but with a nice malty backbone. Well put together.
