Pint at Lockdown in Chicago. 3.50 on special. Dark, hazy amber. Clean clear hop aroma but the hops are all over no one dominant hop flavor. Same in flavors. Clean and hop centric but the mix of hops doesn’t work for my tastes.

Sampler at Standard market. Only my second Tighthead beer in how many years? Well, this is worth the wait. Deceptively pale brown color, like an English BA or a Bigfoot. Thin but dogged layer of fizz on top. malty, nearly syrupy smell, with alcohol acknowledged. Taste is very full of malt, the toasty caramel Crystal kind. But it also has a big load of fresh hop bitterness. The alcohol starts to hit me after the third sip or so. Bitterness makes it more like an Imperial IPA, but them most of my barley wines are aged, not fresh from the tap. Shows a bit of autolyzed yeast.

Shaker at Lockdown. The beer looks like a float with its head popping out the glass. Brown head with a super brown almost black body. Has a sticky-icky lacing. Aroma is bitter black malt, roast, earth, and light coffee. Its very well attenuated. Flavor is the same with a very well fermented beer with few leftover sugars and most of the flavors come off the bitter, earthy malts. Finish is very light with essence of earth and a bark-light bitterness. An awesome bitter brown ale, no chocolate from my POV.

Draft at Tap House Grill, Westmont. Finally get to pop the cap on another recent Chicago brewer. I found myself really liking this and thinking it was a Double IPA. Let me count the ways: a sudsy IPA head over a bright, brassy body. I thought I was just getting a snootful of Mr. Cascade Hopp and his lupalin friends, not having a full description of the beer in front of me. But definitely a very fresh hop beer. Bold taste combining pine, resin and citrus. Lemony aftertaste from the hops, but still matched by plenty of big malts.

Sampled from the tap at FOBAB 2012. Pours near black with a dark brown head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a strong roasted malt with dark grains and just a bit of oats. Flavor has roasted malts with a hint of smoke? and some creamy sweet dark grains.

Sampled from the tap at the Mundelin beer fest. Pours a clear deep gold with a near white head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a surprising amount of grassy hops with a backbone of sweet grains and cereal. Flavor again is grassy with backing cereal note, pretty drinkable.
