Description
Our beers are crafted for a chosen few, a small cadre of renegades and rebels who enjoy a beer that pushes the limits of what is commonly accepted as taste. In short, we make beer for people like us.

Our taproom experience was born in 1997 in downtown Grand Rapids, MI, when our Co-Founders decided to start a brewery and realized immediately that the only way they could earn some cash (the brewery was losing money during those first years) was through bartending. With its super-casual vibe, gritty feel and amazing beer, the taproom quickly became a haven for many misfits, artists, musicians and more in Grand Rapids, outgrowing its tiny space quickly. The good news was, so did the brewery. Our entire operation moved to its current downtown Grand Rapids location 10 years ago to accommodate this growth and has since maintained the relaxed atmosphere and “all are welcome” approach to those who walk through the door. What’s next for our taproom? A second one, of course! We’re headed to Motown and hope to bring our Founders feel to the heart of the Cass Corridor in downtown Detroit.

Bottle, 2021 vintage. Coffee aroma with notes of chocolate, lactose sugar, vanilla, bourbon and oak flavors. Pours deep brown with a thin mocha brown head that has some retention and a thin ring of lacing. Starts with rich chocolate, lactose sugar and oak flavors as well as having a rich, full body and silky smooth mouthfeel. Finishes quite smooth with coffee, vanilla and bourbon flavors. Excellent.

I was happy to learn Founders was re-releasing DKML. The 2017 version was and is the best malt liquor I have tasted. And I do have some experience with the style, a blessing or a liability I am not sure. I found a four pack at a mom-and-pop liquor store in Santa Fe recently and have held off drinking one until I am ready to do a rating. The same taste as the original version? I have no idea what the plan is with the brewer. Meanwhile I have a 12 oz bottle significantly cooled off and ready to go into a glass. Very much your normal beer appearance, I see a clear gold with some red to it in the body and a slender skim of white foam to decreases to a ring around the glass. Plenty of carbonation. I smell grain, bit-of-honey candy and some barrel effect. And now a drink. I believe the taste is similar if not the same as it was several years ago and this is a good thing of course. Grain, bourbon, a candy sweetness, malt, some oak and a small bitterness completing. The mouth feel is quite full, a lot of depth, well done in my opinion. This beer remains the best malt liquor of all time with number 2 way, way behind. Congrats to Founders for bringing this one back and not thinking they had to change it up. I call this a powerful, tasty, fulfilling beer. It was worth the wait.

355ml bottle. Almost opaque, darkest brown colour with small to average, creamy, moderately lasting and lacing, dark beige head. Sweet-ish, slightly toasty and nutty, caramel malty and minimally woody aroma, notes of caramel, dark caramel, hints of toasted nuts, a touch of Bourbon, whiffs of old, dark wood. Taste is sweet-ish, caramel malty, toasty and minimally nutty, dark malty, bitter hoppy and minimally woody, notes of dark caramel, hints of toasted nuts, a touch of Brazil nut, burnt caramel, Bourbon, some roasty bitterness as well; lingering, minimally warming, alcoholic finish, very well hidden alcohol overall.
Oily to viscous texture, smooth and soft, slightly greasy palate, fine, soft to flat carbonation.
Very good mouthfeel, homogeneous, smooth, well hidden alcohol, but also a tad monotonous - okay-ish sipper with a tendency to become boring before emptied.

3 week old can
A: Clear reddish amber with a tall tan head. End of glass retention and sheet lacing.
S: Sweet orange zest, caramel and toasted bread.
T: Bitter and piney with citrus zest and pith. Woody and caramel notes round out the sip.
M: Medium light with soft carbonation and a smooth oatsy texture.
O: Really nice red IPA. A great alternative to Celebration IMO.
