Our taproom experience was born in 1997 in downtown Grand Rapids, MI, when our Co-Founders decided to start a brewery and realized immediately that the only way they could earn some cash (the brewery was losing money during those first years) was through bartending. With its super-casual vibe, gritty feel and amazing beer, the taproom quickly became a haven for many misfits, artists, musicians and more in Grand Rapids, outgrowing its tiny space quickly. The good news was, so did the brewery. Our entire operation moved to its current downtown Grand Rapids location 10 years ago to accommodate this growth and has since maintained the relaxed atmosphere and “all are welcome” approach to those who walk through the door. What’s next for our taproom? A second one, of course! We’re headed to Motown and hope to bring our Founders feel to the heart of the Cass Corridor in downtown Detroit.

Deep dark brown colour, minimal beige-ish lacing; aroma and taste of burnt coconut, vanilla, cinnamon, dark chocolate and coffee notes; great one; thanks so much for sharing, Kapusil!

Bought locally, bottled May 28th 2025.
Pours a clear copper with a fine layer of foam. Good retention and lacing.
Smell is cocoa, coffee, vanilla with light notes of Bourbon.
The taste is cocoa, coffee, vanilla, almost has a fudge taste. Leans on the sweetish side, the Bourbon is there but doesn't dominate. The alcohol is noticeable.
Close to if not full bodied, the carbonation fits nicely.
I would drink this again.

0.355l bottle. Copper body with basically no head only a tiny white lace. Burnt sugar and caramel notes in the aroma with some oak, tequila and lime. Taste of burnt sugar, licorice, lime juice and oak. Sweet, salty and sour at the same time. Lime and licorice is a bit wierd combination for my palate. Interesting beer. Not something I would by regularly, but still I'm glad I tried it.

My 60th Founders beer rating! Honey gold pour. Large, pillowy white head. Fragrant aromas of citrus and pine. Flavor is bittersweet citrus with notes of pineapple and lime pith. Sticky pine on the palate. Dank and resiny finish.

Pours practically black with a medium sized off-white/greyish head that shows very good retention for the style (though 8.3% of course doesn't get too much in the way of getting a good head) and some lacing too. Fairly potent, bright feeling and relatively simple aroma: fresh coffee notes have a slight edge over soft dark chocolate, but basically both are quite strong and feel very natural and well integrated. A bit of soft, oatmeal stout-like feel on the back of things. There's still very good intensity, and more complexity, in taste. Coffee and chocolate (as per aroma) still get the main roles, but there's a good dose of typical oatmeal stout sweetness on the back of things, plus some caramel and a hint of vanilla to round things up. It's a very pleasant malty base that gives a soft feel to the aforementioned notes of coffee and chocolate. A pleasant hint of warmth also shows up, despite the not super high abv. Sweetness and bitterness are both quite bold, but very well integrated and the overall balance is excellent. Long, pleasant coffee aftertaste. Dense bodied (not super dense for the style) with average, quite delicate/light bubbled carbonation; feels soft and very creamy. This is a plainly excellent imperial stout.

Aromas are malt and mild lime. Flavors are similar to nose. Bittersweet with okay body and carbonation and again mild lime flavor. Basic decent pale lager with a little bit of lime. End of story.

Dense, cinnamon coloured head on a brown/black body. Nose leads with big, fresh roasted coffee. The taste keeps the coffee forward theme. Cocoa and hints of vanilla, butter and toffee finish off a well balanced offering. Thick body and a dry finish.
