Cask (handpump) as Santa’s Elephant Stout @ Wenlock Arms, Islington, London N1, UK. Clear medium brown color with a average to huge, frothy / creamy, good lacing, mostly lasting, beige head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, roasted, chocolate, light vanilla. Flavor is moderate sweet and light to moderate bitter with a long duration. Body is medium, texture is creamy, carbonation is flat. (311207)

Cask handpull at Simple Simons, Canterbury. Gold, thin beige head. Hay and nettle hop aroma. Some malt, very tingly on finish. Good aroma, but rest of the beer fades.

Cask gravity at Kingston BF 2007. Another one of the Roger Protz’s beers to try before you die. Copper colour with thin bubbly beige head. Bit undeveloped, raw malt/yeast on aroma. Some fruit. Fine in mouth. Fairly typical UK bitter. Some hop floral on end. Decent bitterness. Almost a bit of chlorine to the hoppiness. Far more bitter than I would expect.

Cask handpull at Gardener’s Arms, Lewes. Copper colour wtih thin bubbly white head. Rich strong bitter. Hop on finish is OK. Alcohol is a bit obvious. Some citrus, malts are subdued, bit of golden syrup. OK. Not what I would call drinkable.

Cask condition handpull at The Wenlock Arms. Hazy amber colour with lasting thin beige head. Some citrus hop, soft and slightly creamy in mouth. some yeast. Drinkable session bitter. Some nice delicate citrus on the finish. Not huge, but hey it’s 3.3%. A little earthy. Pleasant way to start the day’s drinking.

Cask handpump at Simple Simons, Canterbury. Badged as Pinta That 2, but with the same ABV. Copper colour with disappearing white head. Toffee apple aroma with more apple juice than malt toffee in mouth. Slight hop/toffee aroma and green apple, quite full in mouth with dry earthy hop finish. Touch of smoked apple wood. Decent session bitter.

Cask gravity at Dover Beer Festival 2006. Reddish brown colour. No head. Bit of gingerish flavour. Fine, but a bit spicey and odd.

Cask handpull at Simple Simons, Canterbury. Copper/amber colour with thick beige lasting head. Rich red fruit aroma. Rich creamy red fruit, raspberry, redcurrant in mouth. Juicy with good malt hop finish. Good hop/malt balance throughout from aroma to finish. Some yeast on nose. Smooth, easy drinking.

Cask handpull at Simple Simons, Canterbury. Chestnut colour with thick beige head. Spiced malty nose. Lots more spice inmouth with dry malt. Finish had dryness. Full in mouth. Dry malt rather than rich. Some juicyness towards the end. Some milk choc and some sweet strawberry fruit/malt mix is pretty good. Nice balance flavours, spicy but after initial hit, it dies down a bit. Good winter beer. Spice needs a bit more integration
