You see, at that time, no one was risking it all starting a brewery, making simple, premium, easy-drinking ale. To do so was an act of defiance. Or madness. But, 42 years and a lot of hard graft later, by staying true to our beliefs and Bristolian roots, it looks like owning a resolutely maverick brewing company isn’t such a crazy idea after all. By going against the grain, to work intimately with it, we made our own statement with every pint. And what was true then is just as important today.
Butcombe now produces over 250,000 pints a week from our brewery in Wrington. As times and tastes change, so does our range of beers. Alongside Original, Gold and Rare Breed, you’ll find two craft lagers, Bohemia and Underfall, and two IPAs, Goram and Stateside, plus a range of exciting seasonal and small batch specials.

29/4/2022. Cask at the Bottle Kiln, Dovercourt. Pours clear amber gold with a small frothy off-white head. Aroma is tropical, stone fruits, light citrus, straw. Medium sweetness, moderate bitterness and body. Slightly oily and watery, soft carbonation.

Cask-conditioned at the Commercial Rooms (JDW), Bristol 26/5/2022. Golden in colour, with a thin, white, head. A touch of citrus hop, rich tea malts, a touch of lemon fruit sharpness, leading to a moderately bitter finish. Fine.

Cask at the Volunteer Inn, Sidmouth. Poured a clear golden colour with a lasting frothy white head. The aroma is grainy malt, light citrus fruits. The flavour is moderate bitter, light sweet, with a light, grainy, earthy, mineral, light lemon citrus, light woody hop bitter palate. Medium to light bodied with soft carbonation.

Clear golden colour with thin head. Solid malty base. Nice floral and earthy hop notes. Giod level of bitterness.

Small beige head on a reddish brown body. Malt, tea, caramel & bitter aroma. Medium bodied, sharp & clean. Malt, tea, berries & malt tastes with a long bitter finish. What an excellent pint of traditional Bitter.
On keg at the Old Court House Inn. Golden amber with a light haze. Orange and mango on both nose and taste. Close to medium bodied with a dey tangy middle and finish.

# 2853; 4/2022. Malty and light tropical fruit aroma. Unclear gold body; persistant lacing off-white head. Strong malty; citrus, herbal, earthy. Surprisingly malty bitter, NZ hops almost imperceptible. Pint, hand-pulled, pub, Lincoln (Lincolnshire, England).

Bottle from Lidl Supermarket, Todmorden. Golden with a head and a carbonation. Mildly hoppy bit its fair bitterness is more apparent.

Cask: Poured a golden with a white whispery head. Aroma is light malts and grain. Taste is bitter forward, loads of malts and grain.
