You see, at that time, no one was risking it all starting a brewery, making simple, premium, easy-drinking ale. To do so was an act of defiance. Or madness. But, 42 years and a lot of hard graft later, by staying true to our beliefs and Bristolian roots, it looks like owning a resolutely maverick brewing company isn’t such a crazy idea after all. By going against the grain, to work intimately with it, we made our own statement with every pint. And what was true then is just as important today.
Butcombe now produces over 250,000 pints a week from our brewery in Wrington. As times and tastes change, so does our range of beers. Alongside Original, Gold and Rare Breed, you’ll find two craft lagers, Bohemia and Underfall, and two IPAs, Goram and Stateside, plus a range of exciting seasonal and small batch specials.

Chestnut brown with a creamy white head and a sweet, malty aroma with a hint of dry, dark fruit in there. Tastewise it's malty and fruity, slightly dry and a little bitter, an old school brown bitter with a nice edge to it, on the thin side but very smooth and very drinkable

330ml bottle drank at home on 8th September 2021. Bright, clean and clear golden body, white crown for a short while. Dry and semi-hop bitter flavour wise, not much of an aroma. Hot kitchen, need a cold beer; this did the trick.

[33cl bottle from Lidl, Crowthorne.] A slightly hazy straw coloured pour with a tight white head and lively carbonation; grainy aroma; sweet grainy taste with a lot of effervescence in the mouth; and a lightly grassy finish that's slightly drier. A better than average pils.

33cl bottle from Lidl.
Medium white head. Clear golden pour. An ok pilsner
Bottle from Wine Rack. Pours a clear dark amber colour with a medium sized thick creamy off-white head. Aromas of caramel, bread, biscuit and a touch of spice. Taste is again caramel, bread and biscuit with a touch more spice and a subtle smooth bitterness on the finish. Medium to full body with a smooth slightly oily mouthfeel. Nice quality traditional English ale.
