Craig on Heat Tasting at ChrisO’s. Hazy deep red - amber beer, good pale tan head. Fluffy airy palate, semi dry, fine carbonation. Tangy mild dark malts. Malteser centres. Light smoke. Dry grain. Dry finish brings earthy coffee. Lacks cohesion.

Bottle shared at chriso’s. Pours clear, rich amber with a creamy tan head. The nose has rich brown bread, chocolate, mild coffee. Light sweet flavor, some astringent coffee grounds, touches of coffee, dirt. Light to medium bodied with fine carbonation. Toasty bread to finish, some further earth, chalky cocoa. So so.

500 mL bottle. Pours a bright gold to amber, large off white head that lasts, some lacing. Chewy caramel, apple, forest floor, fruity hops in the aroma. Taste is that plus fresh bread and orange zest. Finish is remarkably long bitter. Full mouthfeel with a perfect carbonation level. Excellent interpretation of the style.

Bottle from O’Briens, Athlone [290514]
Copper red, clear, light beige big frothy head, some lacing
Aroma of toasted brown bread, toasted caramel malts, soft berry fruits
Taste of toasted caramel, bit earthy, touch of rust, fairly bitter twiggy hops, red berry fruits
Palate - Fairly soft carb, light to medium body, light sweet berry malts. Finish of bitter toasted malts, lingering bit over bitter rusty note I’m not keen on
Overall - More going on here than usual for an Irish Ale, but those rust notes spoilt it somewhat for me

Bottle from Drinkstore, Dublin [110514]
Dark amber, soft haze, huge frothy white head, good lacing, overcarbonated from the bottle
Aroma of fruity caramel, very soft orange, hint of grapefruit, sweet mellow citrus, slight lemon, slight tropical fruits, picking up quite a lot here on the nose, touch of toasted malts
Taste of citrus zest, caramel malts, soft toasted malts, slight rye, some grapefruit, getting a very slight smoky note, fairly complex, good flavours here
Palate - soft carb (but overcarbonated at start), medium body, soft oily, good bitter / sweet balance, bit tangy. Finish of toasted malts, fairly sweet caramel, bitter zest, fairly bitter linger
Overall - Decent beer, had a fair amount of complexity in there

Bottle at home, from Callans Dundalk, with what must be the longest write up for a 3.8% bitter ever !!! 05/05/14. Clear vibrant golden with a good sized off white covering that retains well - a good looker! Nose is summer fruit, orchard wood, biscuit crumbs, light apple. Taste comprises light citric notes, hint of bread dough, straw, crisp apple skin, light caramel. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close with subtle bitter tones. A well made bitter, not to be filed under ’boring’!

500mL bottle poured into a tulip glass. Large off white head that lasts for awhile, some lacing. Weakish aroma profile of caramel and crystal malts, spicy rye character, some floral hops. Flavor is way more than the aroma, surprisingly firm smooth malt notes along with the spicy rye. Interesting hops used here that give more of a muted floral and fruit bitterness that combines well with the rye. Overall a nice but mild ale.
