5th Annual MBG Winter Beer Festival, Grand Rapids. Murky orange-brown body, medium, dense, creamy head. Caramely nose with brown sugar, clove and banana. Estery, weizen-like body with banana, clove, and toast. Sharply carbonated. Not much tartness, so I doubt this was intended as a sour ale. Long clove finish.

5th Annual MBG Winter Beer Festival, Grand Rapids. 2005 vintage. Murky orange-brown body, medium cream head. Oxidized citrus, sherry, and burnt caramel nose. The body is dominated by faded, oxidized citrusy, piny hops, burnt caramels, toast, and sherry. Light sweetness. Long, bitter finish.

Tap at MBG Summer Festival. Poured orangish gold w/ an off-white head. Aroma was spicy with flora and fruity notes. Flavor was quite sweet with undertones of spices, coriander and fruits. Nothing special.

Sample at the brewpub. Pours a mostly clear amber color with a thin and creamy beige head that diminishes steadily. Top ring of lacing with thin roots snaking down. Aroma of malt, brown sugar and yeast. Medium body with flavors of bready malt, yeast, fruit and candi sugar. The finish is sweet spices and yeast with a fruity aftertaste. Pretty good overall.

Sample at the brewpub: This beer is a clear golden color with a medium and foamy white head. Patchy lacing on the glass. The aroma is spicy and hoppy. Light-bodied and crisp with a mild spice flavor, along with some malt and yeast. The finish is lightly bitter and lingers a bit. Slightly above average overall.

Sample at the brewpub. This beer pours a clear yellow-gold color with a thin and bubbly ivory white head that recedes steadily. Spotty lacing. Mild yeast and spice in the nose, as well as a touch of wheat. Light body with flavors of banana, malt and yeast. The aftertaste is lightly spiced with a lingering clove aftertaste. Above average overall.

Sample from the brewpub: Pours a nearly opaque dark brown color with a thin beige head that has good staying power. Spotty lacing. The aroma is Aunt Jemima all the way. Sweet sweet maple in the nose and nothing else. Light-bodied and sweet, with a maple character that is not as pronounced as in the aroma but it is still very strong. There is some brown sugar and malt in the flavor too, but this skews to the sweet side all the way. The finish is sweet and lingering. An interesting experiment but I would have trouble drinking a pint of this.

This beer pours a dark brownish amber color, considerably lighter than most Doppelbocks. Medium off-white head with good staying power, and decent lacing. The aroma is roasted malt, nuts and hops. Medium-bodied with a robust toasted malt character, along with a good amount of hops and some spices as well. The finish is refreshing and crisp with a nutty aftertaste. Overall this beer doesn’t look like a lot of Doppelbocks but it does a good job just the same.

On tap at the restaurant. Deep brown body, thick creamy ochre head. Aroma of charred roasted malts and sweet, tart fruity notes. Coffee and charred malts dominate the body, but there is an unusual tart fruitiness I associate with homebrews that almost tarnishes the palate. Alcohol minimal.

On tap at the restaurant. Deep brown body, thin buff head. Aroma of milk chocolate and roasted malt with appropriate sweetness for the style. Creamy body dominated by roasted malt, chocolate, and unfermented sugars. Fairly simple.

Sample at the brewpub: This beer is jet black with a medium and rocky tan head with good retention. Very little lacing is apparent. Robust coffee aroma, with some malt here and there. The body is not in the same league with most of the good beers of the style but it is close. Coffee and malt flavors dominate, and there is some hops presence as well. The finish is roasty with a lingering coffee aftertaste. Barely "Imperial" in some regards, but a passable beer nonetheless.
