Notes from May 2009 Separate bottles courtesy of Big Tex & Natalie. Thanks for the continued patronage. :) Poured into my DFH rounded glass. A rich, filtered, rusty maple brown, topped off with an inch of sandy cream head. Minimal lace. Smells of wheat bread, sticky toasted malt, newspaper ink, & a bit of fumey alcohol. Taste starts off with some really sharp malt, mild barky bitterness, followed by some burnt newspaper & toffee that sticks around till the end. Alcohol is solvent-like, but effectively warming. The yeast they're using is a little too clean for the style. Carbonation is strong, but the body is just a too thin for a bock. A little underwhelming for a big time commemorative, but as an affordable seasonal, pretty good. :)

AROMA: Mildly sweet with moderate scents of biscuit and caramel, followed by hints of roasted butternut squash. Overall, a very pleasing aroma.

APPEARANCE: Pours a clear dark-amber with a frothy, 2-finger, tan head that dissipates quickly with no lacing. Initially, it looked great in the glass. But before I could put the glass down, the head had almost completely dissipated. I'm actually quite baffled at how such a frothy, medium-height head could dissipate so quickly.

TASTE: Lightly sweet with mild flavors of caramel and malt. At the very end of the finish, i get just a whisper of cinnamon.

MOUTHFEEL: Heft-wise, I would classify it as medium-bodied. But feel-wise, it is a bit on the watery side. The finish is slightly dry and the carbonation is below average. Honestly, I think this is the characteristic (i.e. mouthfeel) that could use the most improvement.

OVERALL: This is an easy-to-drink beer. Mildly sweet, no bitterness or sourness, pleasant aroma, and standard ABV. I could see myself downing several of these, in a single sitting, and never tiring of it. However, I probably won't ever purchase it again. Mainly because there are other festival beers that I like much better. But also, partly because the beer is not memorable in any fashion. In other words, if I was offered this at a party, or saw it on a menu, I would probably remember that I've had the beer before, but I definitely wouldn't remember my impression of it. Which is sad, because I think the "bones" of the beer are pretty solid, and with a little tinkering I think the brewer could transform this from a "good" beer into a "great" beer.

OK, so I live in the country and I like peaches, but not sure about wheat ales and I like hefes, so what can I expect? I must also say that like saranac, shiner has a special place in my heart as one of the first craft companies I became familiar with back in the middle 90's. This can pours clear light pale. It has a decent head that fades rapidly. The nose is quite mild peach perfume, nothing artificial yet. First flavor seems to be mild in the wheat ale attribute, nothing really bitter but you can tell its a wheat ale fer sher. This is followed up with some peach, mind you, its there but not over the top nor in yer face. Seems to be well balanced for a peach ale, many domestic varieties come across over balanced with peach flavoring and its usually artificial in flavor. Not minding this peacy version, it's yielding a decent session. Finishes with a friendly peach tang, but never really gets tart; just simply a mild wheat ale, lacking tons of wheat ale bitterness, with just a tad of friendly peach presence. Decent carbonation throughout.

355ml. bottle @home, 24/08/2024 [#7.629 Global - #1.489 United States of America - #1 Spoetzl Brewery (My Brewery #322 from the States)] Pours ruby-reddish with a small and lacing white head. Aroma: caramelly malts, dried fruits and toffee. Taste: watery malts, caramel and toffee. Woody palate. Light bodied. Next one, please!

The label on the 12 oz bottle I bought today at the closest HEB supermarket no longer has “Bohemian” on it but the ABV remains the same. I paid more than the going rate for a typical single at the store but that’s all right. I like black lagers. Twist off top, I used to dislike them. Find them convenient now. Drinking from the bottle this evening so I can say the scent gives off some roast, some grain and chocolate, all I can say on that. The taste is similar with perhaps also a bit of caramel sweetness. Not bad but not extraordinary for the style.

12 oz. can from HEB in Boerne, TX. Pours a semi-clear gold color with a white head and great retention. Spots of lacing. Strong peach aroma. Nice natural peach flavor in a basic wheat base beer. Reminds me of a Magic Hat #9. Tasty peach flavor without being too fruity. Light body. Light carbonation. Not bitter. A smooth, clean, and refreshing summer beer.

Yellow with a large white head that faded quickly. Tangy with a lemonade note. Long finish. Medium body.
