Mayflower Brewery
Microbrewery
in Wigan,
Greater Manchester,

Associated Venue: Caskbar
Established in 2001
The brewery itself was founded by Alan Branagan and his wife Tracey in Wigan, back 2001. The brewery changed hands in June 2007. Brewing was suspended between 2009 and early 2010 and restarted in June 2010. The brewery moved again to Orrell, Wigan. After a period of brewing at a number of other breweries including Dunscar Brewery, brewing restarted in 2016 after another move. Brewing was suspended again towards the end of 2017 but after a short sabbatical, returned in 2018 to a brand new premises.
Now at a team of 10 strong, they’re planning to take the scene by storm, conjuring up five core ales, all handcrafted and conditioned in 9-gallon casks.

Cask @ Loom & Shuttle, Darwen (previously Caskbar). Clear golden with a creamy head. Hoppy session with hints of caramel biscuit behind a bitterness.

Cask @ New Oxford, Salford. Golden session textured hoppy ale. It's a steady brew in this respect.

Gift from a colleague. Aroma is roasty with coffee and dark berries. Dark but thin looking - a cola tint. Creamy light beige head. Medium bitter. Coffee and charcoal. Berry sourness on the periphery. Into the finish there's a hint of creamy sweetness alongside the charcoal. Medium bodied. Creamy. Average carbonation. Dry astringent finish. Decent stuff.

Bottle from a colleague. Fruit and berries in the malty aroma. Amber. Bubbly translucent white head. Medium bitter with a fruity sour edge. Underlying malts. Light. Slick. Fizzy carbonation. Dry astringent finish. For a low ABV session bitter it's got character and a kick.

Bottle from a colleague. Aroma does have a lemon element as to be expected but you've also got boiled veg and marker pen. Pale copper gold. Creamy translucent white head soon recedes. Light sour. Underlying malts and butterscotch. Light bodied. Thin. Fizzy carbonation. Long dry slightly sickly finish. Doesn't work for me - the light bitter and citra don't sync.

Bottle from a colleague. Earthy malty aroma with some underlying citrus. Pale brown tinged gold. Frothy translucent white head. Medium bitter. Develops a sour edge. Light bodied. Thin. Soft-fizzy carbonation. Long dry astringent finish. As it states on the bottle it's a hoppy gold. No complaints about that.

Gift from a colleague. Malty aroma with a fruity edge. Amber gold. Fluffy white head. Light-medium bitter. Underlying sweetness. Some sourness in the sweet fruit. Malty core. Light-medium bodied. Slick/thin. Soft-fizzy carbonation. Slightly astringent finish. Oldschool and malty but enough fruit to keep it interesting.

Handpull cask at Cask Bar, Darwen. Amber, clear with a big off-white head. Bready notes, forest floor, orange peel in the aroma. Sweet aroma with a gentle leafy hop kickback. Long, balanced finish. Soft carbonation, full mouthfeel. A winning bitter.
