Description
Kompaan had humble beginnings, with just a few recipes and a whole lot of gusto. The brewery was founded by Jeroen and Jasper, two school friends that have known each other longer than not. They shared a zest for life and were ready to put The Hague on the craft beer map. The brewery name is based on this friendship, two companions drinking together. As a modern, young brewery making contemporary, exciting beers, the name is spelt in modern Dutch, as “kompaan”, and not “compaen”.

Bottle from Speciaalbierpakket. Aroma is resinous hops, tea, malt, grapefruit, some caramel, pine resin, citrus, mild toffee, ripe fruits. Flavour is medium sweet with a bitter finish. Body is medium. Not a great IIPA but pretty good overall with a resinous malt-forward aroma that includes ripe fruit and soft hops, supplemented by a sticky bittersweet flavour.

From tap at Little Delirium, Amsterdam. Aroma is lots of wood with plenty of whiskey, soft peat, chocolate, notes of dried fruits, marzipan, liquor, more whiskey. Heavy on the whiskey with light booze. Flavour is fairly bitter and mild sweet. Body is above medium. Relatively modest in flavour and body, pronounced whiskey, enjoyable.

Bottle from a local bottle shop. Aroma is dark malt, lactose, caramel, light roast. Flavour is moderate sweet and light bitter. Body is weak and watery, doesn't work for me. Overall I'd say the aroma is okay, but I guess I don't really see the point of this weak bodied a Milk Stout.

Bottle from Drankenhandel Leiden. Aroma is fairly sharp rum barrel with sweet caramel malt, dried fruits, raisins, some figs, and alcohol. Flavour is sweet with warming alcohol in the finish. Body is medium. Lacks balance, this is pretty unrefined barrel aging.

Bottle from Drankenhandel Leiden. Aroma is yeasty with floral notes, overripe sugary fruit, alcohol, malt, bit soapy, and relatively noticeable noble hops. Flavour is sweet with a mild but (again) noticeable bitterness for a Tripel, as well as some booze. Body is above medium. Sweet and boozy, a bit sharp rather than smooth, but overall fairly enjoyable.
