Description
I felt this desire to make better beer. While studying in London, I developed a passion for quality ales and when I returned to Connecticut with my family, I knew I wanted to leave consulting and turn my passion into a business. I worked hard to master my craft. My wife, Ann, and I opened the doors to Cottrell and on February 28, 1997, we rolled the first keg of Old Yankee Ale down Mechanic Street to our local watering hole, CC O'Brien's. Our mission was then, and is still now, to produce the best product that we can using fresh, natural, quality ingredients.

If you haven’t tried Cottrell , you are missing out on a uniquely brewed, quality product steeped in New England history and great taste. Cottrell is something I hold dear to my heart and I want to share it with the world

Mechanic St brewery closed in 2022 and brand sold to Powder Hollow Brewing.

12 oz. bottle at Rye & Thyme - Leominster, MA. Brownish black color with creamy 1 finger nail size, diminishing off white head, no lacing. Nose is malty and light peat. Chewy caramel sweetness with lots of peat, some traces of smoke, bright fruitiness and a slight alcohol burn. Just the right amount of peat. Overall I really enjoyed drinking this and I would drink it again if offered.

On tap at the bocktown. Darker brownish looking beer. Has a somewhat volatile aroma of whiskey soaked fruit. First taste makes me think of a barley wine. Peat and cloying sweet. Almost induces a gagging effect. Each swig is the same impression, never morphs. Difficult at times. Not impressed. Typical scotch ale, rude and strong. Not my fave. Thought it was going to be a scottish alle, was fooled.

Bottle. Buttery caramel malt and tea aroma. Hazy amber with a small ivory head. Sweet buttery caramel flavor. There seems to be a diacetyl issue going on with this one. Medium body, light to flat carbonation.
