At Hedonis Ambachtsfest, where this was presented as a 'stock ale', which is (or rather: was) a 19th-century English ale type, aged extensively on wooden barrels, firmly hopped and relatively - i.e. to traditional English standards - high in alcohol strength. This one, on top of all that, is intentionally refermented with Brettanomyces, which I suspect was merely a side effect in the original stock ale era, like in aged porters. In any case, stock ale died out in the beginning of the 20th century due to shifting tastes and higher taxes on alcohol, so we have no way to judge "truth to style" here anyway... Thickly lacing, snow white, moussy and stable head over a lightly hazy golden beer with warm peachy hue. Aroma of old toast, green tea, lime, orange zest, melon, pineapple, peanuts, vague wet wood, hardly any Brett effects - this sample was probably still to young for that, but the aroma is attractive and interesting enough. Fruity, estery onset, pineapple, red apple peel, very sharp and minerally, numbing, spritzy carbonation; slick malt body, cereally with a pleasantly nutty edge and a thin toasty accent in the end, but it is an aromatic, 'modern' hop character that rules the finish, brightening it with hints of lime zest and bitter honey, whilst laying a soft, floral bitterness on top of the soft toasted malt bitterness; minerally notes from the overcarbonation linger in the end. Nice and quenching, indeed English feeling beer, but low in both barrel effects and Brettanomyces and hopped like a present-day Anglo-Saxon pale ale would be - so very likely not at all 'historical' as a stock ale, or not a stock ale at all to begin with.

Sampled at Foeders, Amsterdam. Dark red-brown color, average sized beige head. Smells like a Fleming red-brown. Flavor is very sour, sour wood, sour dark fruit. Meh not my kind of beer. Don't like it.
