Slightly hazy golden coloured amber body with a thinnish light tan head. Aroma of fresh hops, caramel, nuts and a bit of sugar - pretty nice, mostly nutty though - so the EPA shows through. Medium-bodied; Strong caramel flavour tucked in with the english low a.a. hops and a nice rounded out maltiness. Aftertaste shows sweetness and the hops bittering at the end. Overall, a nice beer - definitely an EPA, but not an amazing choice. It went well and was a good base for Fish & Chips, but I wouldn’t buy a six pack of this! I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Total Wine in Durham, North Carolina on 31-August-2008, at home in Washington on 21-October-2008.

Medium-bodied; Sharp malty flavour with some pit fruit tastes in the forefront that taste well and show sweetness. Aftertaste fades to nuttiness, malt and a light caramel flavour. Almost no hops at all to speak of. Overall, a decent brown, but since this isn’t my style, I can’t say it’s amazing. Worth trying if you like the style since it wasn’t bad in any respect - tough to say for a lot of the beers in this style! Thanks Santa! A rare treat. I really love the nice combination of rich roasty malts and bright resiny citric hops on this one. Some good chocolate too. Very dark brown, voluminous beige head. Flavor is restrained, surprisingly, with a mild roast and coffee combination, and a wet ashy finish. Pretty decent from a brewery I’ve never even heard of!

This fabulous extra was provided bottle form by kp. Thanks Keith! Pours a reddish brown with a medium head and little retention. Grainy, malty aroma... rice and creamed corn. Pretty much the same taste as the aroma. Strong grain taste, almost comically so. Alcohol is barely noticeable. Drinkable.

Small amount of rapidly dissipating, medium-beige head tops this copper-auburn tinted brown barleywine. Clear, lightly effervescent, with no lacing left.
Smells hoppy and of plentiful caramel malt. Bready, with dry toffee and light butter (not diacetyl) signifying probably some munich malt. A strong ester profile of raspberries and strawberries slowly melds in to heady alcohol fumes on the finish, which is quite dry in contrast to the malty sweet beginning. Medium strength of aroma, no flaws.
About as run-of-the-mill American barleywine as I can think of, with the usual huge caramel-toffee maltiness, scratchy breadiness and obnoxious bittering hop profile. Maybe some date and nut notes in there too. I don’t really understand what about these things I ever enjoyed, as I certainly can’t find anything now. Medium amounts of lively carbonation, with a malty-sweet texture and strong alcohol warmth on the finish. No flaws. Thanks for the bottle, Tom!

Courtesy of Badgerben. This barleywine is loaded with hops. I often don’t like my barleywines loaded with hops, but this makes it work very well. Lots of fruity and floral hops in the aroma, so much so I was expecting an IPA. Gold color and minimal cloudiness. Flavor is mostly hops like the aroma but here the alcohol shows just a little bit, but overall it is hidden well and I am surprised to see it is 9.3%. Some malt sweetness, but the hops dominate.

This beer is all about the hops, and the hop aroma and flavor are powerful well done. There is a good malt base to the beer, which contains sugar and some fruit, but the hops shine through with lots of bitterness and some floral, citrus flavors. Cloudy and full bodied.
