Description
All over the United States, craft breweries are continuing an American tradition which experienced an almost 50 year drought after the repeal of prohibition. Big Muddy Brewing in Murphysboro, Illinois is much like many of these new “microbreweries” all over the country, reinvigorating an industry and continuing a heritage that has skipped several generations.
Until 1940, Murphysboro was the home of a thriving brewery and until prohibition; it was one of the cornerstones of the town’s industry. In 1910, the Stecher Brewing Company produced more than 40,000 barrels of beer a year. However, passage of the Volstead Act in 1919, which ushered in the era of prohibition, began a slow decline to the brewery’s demise.
Big Muddy Brewing’s founder Chuck Stuhrenberg attended Southern Illinois University Carbondale in the 1980s. After graduation, he opened a franchise of Chicago’s Rosati’s Pizza in Carbondale and in 1990, began another venture, Spray Shield Industries.
It was while Stuhrenberg was in college at SIU that he began making his own beer.
Stuhrenberg and his college buddies would homebrew, and as the years went on, he began to take his hobby more seriously.
Stuhrenberg always had professional brewing in the back of his mind, but it stayed a hobby until 2009. In July, 2009, Big Muddy Brewing finally began production, the first brewery in Murphysboro in over 50 years.

12 ounce bottle, 6/23/21. Forgot where I got it. Clear copper, thin fizzy head, poor retention. Aroma of raisin and caramel. Taste is much the same, some toffee as well. Thin, simple. Overall solid.

Pour is more of a brown with a small white head. Aroma is as advertised, lots of chocolate and peanut butter. Flavor is again chocolate and peanut butter with a dry finish. I don't know what artificial flavoring they put into this beer but whatever it was did the trick. Tastes just like a peanut butter cup. Having a sample of this is plenty, having more that one would be a bit cloying.

A reddish brown ale with a thick frothy creamy mocha head. In aroma, sweet caramel malt with dark fruits, resinous hops, light alcohol warmth, very nice. In mouth, a nice caramel malt with dark fruits, resinous herbal hops, treacle, light coffee, pleasant. Bottle about 5 years old.

Bottle pour from Friar Tuck, Crestwood. Appearance is very dark brown (virtually opaque) with nice sparkle at the edges of the glass, finger-width khaki head with poor retention and no lacing. Aroma is vanilla, roasted malt and cocoa. Taste is vanilla, milder roasted malts and later more moderate cocoa with marshmallows. Mouthfeel is light-to-medium bodied with smooth, frothy texture, soft carbonation and finish as taste with mild lingering bitterness offsetting the sweet. Overall, the aroma and flavor could be bolder it’s a bit thin for the style, but enjoyable.

Bottle pour from Friar Tuck, Crestwood. Appearance is clear golden yellow with nice sparkle, finger-width fizzy off-white head with poor retention and no lacing. Aroma is strong sweet blueberry and lightly tart raspberry. Taste is strong blueberry with mild tart raspberry, background cracker malts. Mouthfeel is light side of light-to-medium bodied with thin, smooth, frothy texture, average carbonation and crisp finish as taste. Overall, pretty much how you'd expect it to be with big blueberry and not much else. Mild tart quality of raspberry adds a bit of extra interest. Avoids going over the edge like an artificial blueberry gum or something.

Bottle: Dark, clear, red-lit black with a tan head. Slightly ashy, chocolate and vanilla scent. Taste is vanilla, chocolate malt....a touch of roasty bitter. Flavour and body come across too lightly to make this one stand out......good....but very little to it.

This beer is a clear copper-gold color with a medium off-white head that dissipates steadily to an outer ring. Short strings of lace. Wheat, blueberry and malt aroma. Medium body with flavors of blueberry, slight hops and grainy malt. The finish is fruity with a berry aftertaste. Average overall.
