Description
All over the United States, craft breweries are continuing an American tradition which experienced an almost 50 year drought after the repeal of prohibition. Big Muddy Brewing in Murphysboro, Illinois is much like many of these new “microbreweries” all over the country, reinvigorating an industry and continuing a heritage that has skipped several generations.
Until 1940, Murphysboro was the home of a thriving brewery and until prohibition; it was one of the cornerstones of the town’s industry. In 1910, the Stecher Brewing Company produced more than 40,000 barrels of beer a year. However, passage of the Volstead Act in 1919, which ushered in the era of prohibition, began a slow decline to the brewery’s demise.
Big Muddy Brewing’s founder Chuck Stuhrenberg attended Southern Illinois University Carbondale in the 1980s. After graduation, he opened a franchise of Chicago’s Rosati’s Pizza in Carbondale and in 1990, began another venture, Spray Shield Industries.
It was while Stuhrenberg was in college at SIU that he began making his own beer.
Stuhrenberg and his college buddies would homebrew, and as the years went on, he began to take his hobby more seriously.
Stuhrenberg always had professional brewing in the back of his mind, but it stayed a hobby until 2009. In July, 2009, Big Muddy Brewing finally began production, the first brewery in Murphysboro in over 50 years.

Bottle to English pint glass.
Appearance: dark brown close to black color with a two finger eggshell white foamy head which dissipated nicely to leave some light lace
Aroma: marshmallow sweetness and big milk chocolate tones up front then subtle tones of some graham cracker but super hard to pick that up, some black coffee roast in there
Flavor: wraps up the prior noted aromas to a fine sweet quality; finishes like liquified s'mores
Texture: light to medium bodied, sessionable, pretty smooth along the tongue but becoming sonewhat mobile along the tongue
Overall: borderline getting close to watery if it was one further step down on that body. Luckily, the aromas and flavors seemed to meshed well.

Bottle to nonic glass.
Appearance: dark brown close to black color with a two finger white foamy head which dissolved fairly quick and barely left any lace
Aroma: milk chocolate, sweet vanilla, some marshmallows, sweet coffee and cola
Flavor: combines the prior noted aromas to fine sweet quality with a super light roasty tone underneath; finishes with a long lingering sweetness of chocolate, vanilla and cola
Texture: light to medium bodied, sessionable, some smoothness
Overall: I bet this might be a lot better without that "cola" scent and flavor I noticed and wasn't entirely thrilled about, was this a Nogne beer in disguise?

Bottle pour from Friar Tuck, Crestwood. Clear dark brown--virtually opaque--with thin head and trace lacing. Aroma is strong peanut butter, chocolate. Taste is strong initial peanut then decays into earthy, slightly bitter peanut shell. Frothy texture, soft carbonation, finish as taste. Not expecting huge body here but pretty weak. Aroma is great and initial hit in taste matches but it falls off precipitously.

12 oz. shared by tfontana, thanks Tom! Aroma has bold peanut butter right from the pop of the cap. The flavor really sings extract. It does have a lot of peanut butter flavor, but not bold peanut or boiled peanuts. Decent for the ABV.

Draft at Big Muddy during the 2024 eclipse. Ordinary looking golden pils color. Note of green peppers in the nose. The heat of those fresh peppers is right up there in the taste. I'm liking the burn. It can overpower the malt at times, but that can be expected.

The strawberry is pretty tart and a bit wild tasting, but nicely balanced.

Pour is a clear orange with lots of floating things in the beer. Aroma is orange peel hops. Flavor is more orange citrus hop with some semi-sweet chewy malt. This was just ok. More hop presence than your usual cream ale but nothing else really stands out.
