Description
Scofflaw burst onto the scene during the latter half of 2016 and has quickly become recognized for its highly sought after IPAs and Stouts including Basement IPA, POG Basement IPA, as well as its higher-gravity IPAs such as the Double Jeopardy and Hooligan. Scofflaw's Absentium Stout, and in particular the Barrel Aged Vanilla Absentium stout, are coveted among traders. Even so, Scofflaw's focus continues to be on Atlanta's west midtown area and its surrounding neighborhoods, such as the Bolton hood.

Unexpectedly off-the-mark for Scofflaw, with a muted citrus middle backed up by a strong, almost medicinal piney bitterness on the back end. The bitter streak in and of itself isn't a bad thing, but the hops never do much beyond providing a resinous, clingy fade. Slight caramel sweetness is offset by a pronounced whitebread undercurrent. Eh.

So the label on my can says Human Highlight Film, while the label in the picture says Human Highlight Reel. Both say Imperial Pale Ale, which I'm pretty sure isn't a thing, but to hell with it. Not sure where I stand with this pint; the hops offer a pleasing dose of orange, berry, and mango, laced with mint and resin, but there's a weird, medicinal bitterness hanging around, clashing with the mild honey sweetness on the back end. And, where bitterness in modern IPAs has become a pleasant surprise, the clingy, intrusive bitterness here gives the pint a homebrew-ish quality usually not found in Scofflaw offerings. Not bad--my pint is empty--but odd.

Unique, very biscuity and grainy, lots of toasted malt underneath orange, pineapple, and stone fruit, with a slight mineral bitterness on the back end. Malts come across too raw, however, giving the pint an unfinished feel. Interesting, but not my favorite.
