This beer isn't joking, most people will not like it because its very bitter. Very nice shade of brown with a regular head. If you like something that will kick you in the balls then this is the beer for you.

[man, I can’t believe I used to love this stuff so much - it’s so incredibly alcoholic/boozy - of course, it will always hold a special place in my heart anyway] This tastes very much like its little brother, arrogant bastard, which, of course, is a really good thing - looks and smells just like it - the most immediately noticable traight that sets this beer apart is the sweet, strawberry-like flavor that manifests itself midway through the sip, swirling somewhere is the hop bitterness, creating a bitter/sweet dichotomy that begs you to take another sip - caramel, toastiness, biscuit - very well-balanced, but, for what it’s worth, it’s almost not different enough from arrogant bastard to even be considered a different beer (aside from the alcohol content) - of course, who really cares? it rocks anyway.

Ruby coloured amber body with a dense tan head. Aroma of nice hops, very strong with showing of rye, caramel and potent malt. Heavy-bodied; Powerful hop taste-large rye flavours with caramel and a bit of spices. Aftertaste actually fairly clean compared to the taste-strong hop bitterness dominates the palate. Overall, just what I was expecting from Stone. A super-hopped-not-well-balanced beer. If you want hype and hops go with Stone-you won't be dissapointed! This one doesn't do it for me, it needs a lot more! I shared this bottle with Haddon90 (Thanks Phil) on 27-November-2003 from which he purchased from Norm's in Vienna, Virginia.

Bottle. A dark red-brown beer with a good beige head that sits on top for a while. There’s a huge blast of a citrusy aroma (grapefruit). The taste is thick and starts with a sweet malt and alcohol that develops into a tea-like flavor before finishing in a bitter hoppy finish combined with a big alcohol presence. It’s very syrupy and that’s about the only thing that brings you away from the alcohol. The flavor is complex - pine tars, toffee, grapefruit... It’s a very good beer, and I love Stone, but I expected a higher hop level and the thick mouthfeel does detract.

2003 bottle. Poured a fiery red-orange, with a light tan head dissipating to an off-white ring of carbonation around the rim of my St. Bernardus glass. Aroma of caramel, dark fruit, and some citrusy hops. Flavor leaned towards the malt sideline, with strong caramel, breadiness, and dark, sweet fruits dominating the flavor. Grapefruit hops with a touch of bitterness were also present. Alcohol was nicely masked. This is one sticky beer. In comparison to Bells Batch 6000, this is definitely smoother around the edges, also having a fuller mouthfeel and malt rather than hop dominance. The caramely aroma contrasted the sweeter, soylike aroma of Batch 6000. At this point in time, I can say that Stone produces the most consistently smooth, delicious beverages in the nation. Still, I can't help but think I've tasted most of the Double Bastard before in their other beers...

Bottle. I am starting to suspect that Stone’s bottles do not travel well to the East coast all the time. This was my second disappointing experience with Stone. Pours a deep reddish mahogany, with some slight beige/white mildly creamy head. Again, no sediment whatsoever. Aroma is sharp and smells overly bitter and citrusy. Opens up with a muted malt taste. In the middle of the beer, all of a sudden there is a bitter twang of hops flavor. Earthy yet piney, like a musty pinecone lying in the dirt. The malt is most curious in that it is not terribly sweet, but more dry and salty. Texture is very similar to ruination ipa, velvety. Beer certainly dosent thin out and has a nice full body, but the flavors are strange to say the least. Slight astringency problems arise. Has a muted honey herb flavor as it finishes and there is still bittersweetness on the palette. I really wish I could try this on tap. I would imagine it to be much better. Definitely want to try again. Rerate. Bottle again. Opened up bitter, muddled and syrupy BUT as it warmed and breathed, I finally saw some goodness in this beer. Flavor of a double IPA comes out, moderate caramel malt, chewy, almost leafy-like texture, fuzzy, peppery. Big bitter flavor and too much acid on the finish, but the nice hop flavor is apparent.

Sampled 50-60 deg F in a straight sided pint glass. A very attractive and inviting beer with a dark ruby color and firm creamy head with heavy lacing. Reminiscent of Bigfoot ale: strong caramel malt backbone topped by a ton of hops - just a different kind of hop than Bigfoot. Very piney and resiny. Malts are present, providing a syrupy body with some caramel and toffee presence, but the hops effectively mask most malt taste. A quinine type bitterness, hop flavors are tingly in the mouth, mixing with the syrupy feel in an almost unpleasant way. Maybe I’m not worthy, but I don’t believe this beer is particularly great. Rerate: not sure what was wrong the last time I had this, but this bomber (purcahsed at my local gas station here in FL, rockin!) was a fairly decent, somewhat balanced dark hoppy ale. The malts were mildly chewy, caramelized and sweet. The hops were resiny with a slight citric character. Not overly bitter. More of a balanced finish, Upgrade from the old 3.5

The arrogant bastards at Stone pulled a fast one! This isn't beer; it's really fermented grapefruit juice! Hops are dominating, and the grapefruit flavor is immediate and thick. I love the color of this one too- it is dark amber/red, fitting for a beer with an arrogant gargoyle on the bottle. Arrogant Bastard is a top-notch ale, and pleasantly strong! Update...no change in score, but I found this on tap at Mac & Joes in Oxford, Ohio, a sign that the world is not yet ending, as there is good beer to be quaffed.

[wow, glad I revisited this rating - yea, this stuff is good, but it’s pretty much nothing but highly sweet, with assertive hops] Hmm, quite unique and flavorful. Nice deep amber color w/good lacing. Very malty aroma, with some hints of plums. Very thick body heavy with malts and with decent hops. Oily mouthfeel. Peppery and slighty fruity-sweet. Very barley wine-ish, specifically, very much like Sierra Nevada Bigfoot. This is better, however. I’m very thankful that we can finally get Stone beers in NY.

Another Imperial IPA by Stone. A good overall beer, but simply too much for a standard beer. Good colour and great hoppy nose, as usual...but simply too much to process.
