The last thing I thought I would do is give this a solid average rating. I figured it was a love it or hate it proposition. A unique beer with massive taste (and ABV) but misses the mark on balance and blend, which lands it in the middle for me. The peaty scotch is flat out dominant in the nose and taste. Caramel malt, candied fruit, wood and smoke fight their way into the taste picture. I honestly can’t comment on the hoppy levels with the peat and Scotch profiles so high. Nice rich body and love the colour and luminous, unfiltered look. I will age a couple of these and see if the blends improve.

More stone bite. A dense off white head on a deep mahogany body. Nose is dank hops, citrus and brown sugar. A nice biting hop profile leads the way. Pineapple, lemon, pine resin, grapefruit and grass hops don’t let you off easy. Biscuity malt, caramel and honey take a clear second bill to the bitterness. Nice carbonation, and a solid mid density body add to a slick mouth feel. Oh, stop it, Stone people.

A pronounced pure white head on a yellow straw body. An understated nose features a spritz of lemon and pils malt. This is a stone revelation - understated, clean and a touch unobtrusive. Taste profile leads with classic pils malt but is supported by lemon and grapefruit hoppiness. It is reasonably dry with a touch of pepper and a hint of cherry in the aftertaste. Very clean, refreshing and light.

Another heavy-weight ale in the arrogant bastard series. The nose leads with roasted caramel malt, with added touches of woodiness and bourbon. Signature deep roasted caramel malt leads the way with some raisins, dark berries and citrus and piney hops. The bourbon and oak have a slightly nasty edge to them. A dense body with a slick almost sticky mouth feel helps sustain both the malt and hoppy elements. Not their best of the brand by any stretch.

Another great offering from the dark side of Stone. A rich mahogany red body with a thin off-white head. Taste profile blends some fresh and powerful elements - earthy and fruity hops, rich, sweet caramel malt, dark berries, brandy and a hint of nuttiness. Rich and sustained taste.

As hot a tamale as advertised in their always provocative promotional material. Characterized as “a brave beer” by beer enthusiasts I shared this with, it’s hard to imagine how many peppers go into creating this searing sipper. On top of the heat, there are delicious caramel malts, bourbon from the barrelling and enough hops to support the taste. Nice one to share and I wish I had more.

A spectacular variation on the Double Bastard. The typical DB hops are still there, but are complimented by whiskey, zesty rye, spice, cherries, apricots, cardamom, toffee malts, and hints of vanilla and peat. Big and rich and well blended with a great boozy burn.

A solid off-white head atop a rich looking deep amber-brown colour. The nose warns of the malt to come, with a touch of citrus hops. Roasted malt is the hallmark of the \"Bastard\" series. Secondary tastes include rich dark berries, citrus and piney hops, and toffee. Solid richness in the body works well with the soft carbonation. A clean sweetness that isn’t cloying helps smooth it all together. A really great beer, but I am not giving it extra \"Rogue\" points.

From March 11th 2007:
Pours from 22oz bottle(room temp) a clear deep amber with a huge head of foam that just won't quit. Solid layer with lots of lacing.
The smell is very hoppy. I note grapefruit in big abundance.
The taste on first sip is hugely hoppy. Lots of citrus that makes your mouth want to pucker but just before it does, the malt moves in and somewhat tames the hops. No, more than that. The malt actually takes over the flavour and I'm not talking really sweet caramel malt...wait...yes I am. Wow. You fooled me. ;^) Boy, is this a treat.
Further sips in and I'm getting more of the balanced flavours but mind you, while the hops and malt seem to be working in unison, I cannot deny that the said flavours are as big and bold as the great outdoors. Like the label says, this is an aggressive beer and it refuses to let you just sit there and reach a comfort zone; when you're sipping on it, it takes center stage and all others things going on around you become mere side shows. What an egotistical brew and...I'm loving it!
Bottom line: A fantastic brew that will earn your attention whether you wish to or not. Highly recommended!
