Description
It was in 1973 that the adventure of the "Au Baron" brewery began. Alain Bailleux then purchased the last bistro in the village there. There he meets Danielle who will become his wife. Together, they embark on small catering. Later, Alain and his father, retired master brewer, challenge each other; create a craft brewery. This will be done on June 8, 1989 when Gussignies inaugurated the village brewery with Saint-Médard, a beer inspired by the farm-breweries of yesteryear. For a few years now, Florence and Xavier have taken over the reins of the family business and continue to make the Baron prosper by adding a local store where you can buy beers and products from local producers.

Aroma has quite a bit of a pale sweet malt character with the graininess of pilsner malt and a touch of a pale malt aroma. Balanced phenolics and esters. The phenolics are mostly clove with a touch of peppercorn as it warms. The esters are banana, floral and a touch of citrus. Pours a slightly cloudy golden straw with a thin white head that recedes very quickly. No head retention and no lacing. The sweet malt flavors hit immediately. Lots of pilsner an background pale notes. Behind that this beer is an ester bomb. Lots of pear, citrus and banana. Also very floral and a bit cidery. Low to no hop flavor and low to medium low bitterness. No alcohol flavor. A touch of astringency way back in the finish. Phenolics are less noticeable in the flavor but there is a hint of clove. A touch of a hard water mineral flavor. Mouthfeel is medium light bodied with high carbonation. Astringency is very low and alcohol warmth is low. Overall I really like this beer and the style. Perhaps the esters in the flavor could be a bit lower, and more balanced with the phenolics but this is really nicely done. Easy drinking though a touch sweet. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

0.75l bottle from Village de la Bière Strasbourg (bought in 2011). Hazy deep amber-brown colour, mid-sized beige head. Fruity nose. Medium-bodied, malty base with lots of dark berries (currant, black-currant, blackberries...) and nice resiny hops. Wild and slightly sour (berries) overall character - very nice and unusual.

Bottle at a Ratebeer "sticky floor" tasting, Den Haag. Poured a cloudy yellow colour with a thin white head and broken lace. The aroma is dry any yeasty. The flavour is lively yeasty fruity with the yeasty flavour hitting the palate very quickly. A rather drinkable beer, but should not win too many awards.
